Just leave it in gear... Its not better either way and your not gonna save anything notcible on gas if thats your angle.

you said " gear 1", so I assume you have a manual tranny. It is not a big deal, but you will feel tired with your left foot if you step down on the clutch pedel all the time.

Its best to put it in 4th gear... that way you're really ready and you save time and energy from having to shift through all those unecessary gears.

When driving my manual car, I have always and was always told to put it into neutral. Someone told me that if you leave it in first all the time, even with the clutch down, you're wearing that gear down faster... because you use first gear the most.

^On previous cars, I would only shift to nuetral when I felt lazy. With the clutch in, it shouldn't be engaging the gear so I don't see how it would affect it while stopped.

Only time i put it in neutral is when i'm going to be setting stopped for awhile, like waiting for a train to go by, a stop like that i know holds a long time...etc

When completely stopped I always put it in neutral and leave the clutch out. Don't want my left calf getting bigger than my right calf!
I keep an eye on the current green light, when it turns yellow I clutch in and put it into first.
It really is a matter of personal preference I guess.
Be patient when getting used to your 6mt, and as always have fun!

if the closing distance is far i slap it into N. but if the distance is short i jus coast it in gear and let the car slow down on its own
