When I start up my G, the G seems to idle pretty high (1.5k). When I start the engine, it never seems to be a nice and smooth start up. I hear a quick and slight wining noise as I start up the car (in the morning for example). I usually let the engine run for about 4 min, and the needle gradually comes down to about 800 rpm. The engine temperature is about almost a quarter above the C line as well at this point. Is this customary. Should I be waiting for a longer period of time for my G to warm up...or should I not really be waiting all.

 

seems normal to me... how cold is it where you are? The colder it is, the longer it'll take...

 

Do you park outside? Does moisture build up on your belts causing the car to make the whining noise you're referring to? BTW, don't let your car run for 4 minutes w/o having a load on the engine. Give it 5-15 seconds and then go. Keep the rpm's around 2000 to 2500 until the car is warmed up then drive normally.

Well...I go to school in Atlanta....Right now the weather is warm (about 75 degress). But the temperature will be getting colder as winter approaches....The other weekend, we had a bit of a cold front and the temperature was around 60 degrees. I thought it was pretty abnormal for my car to be idling at 1.5k when I turned on the engine, thats why I had been waiting for about five minutes to let the needle drop to about 800 revs.... I figured, when the winter really rolls around, that I should expect to wait even longer for the car to warm up.

 

Yes I park outside.... How long do you guys let your car warm up before taking off?

 

i let it warm up for 15 seconds then drive like a granny, shifting at 2.5k until the car warms up completely.

I rarely let my car idle for more than 15-20 seconds. I'm just careful about driving like a lunatic till the engine warm's up.

 

With fuel injected engines, a 4 minute warmup is unnecessary. In fact, it MAY be bad for the engine depending on who you talk to. When the engine doesn't have load (in park or neutral), not enough oil is being injected into the engine. Basically, the engine isn't being well lubricated (supposedly what I've read). I really don't know if its true or not.

Personally, I don't think its good or bad...just wastes gas. If you drive slow for about a mile, you're pretty much good to go.

It's absolutely normal for a VQ engine to idle at 1500 rpms when you start it and it doesn't need more than a minute to warm up. Just be easy on the throttle the first few minutes until the needle climbs above C, you don't want to spin a rod bearing. As far as idle rpms, 800 is nothing to worry about. Idle speed depends on many things, like the type of transmission you have, A/C temperature, etc. The VQ35 really isn't the smoothest engine out there.
