break in period

OK. so does anyone know exactly what the break-in period is? I've heard some people say 1,000 miles. The manual says 1,200 miles. I also have a friend (a porsche guy) who says that you should really go 2,000 miles because 50% of the wear on the engine happens in the first 2k.
I just hit 1,000 miles and I'm dying to tear this thing open!!!!!

50% of the engine wear in the first 2000 miles? lol. Thats a new one.

Just take it easy for the first 1200 and gradually go harder after that.

Blitzjb: Funny you said that. Actually one of the salesmen told me I could redline it out of the factory. I didn't want to chance it, though.
EZZ: Thanks. I guess the manual knows best.

Re: break in period

I just got mine two days ago. I had the thing up to 6000 rpm yesterday and am now wondering WTF was I thinking?? Hopefully the "break-in" period is a bunch of BS.

Re: break in period

it's not a bunch of BS fellas. The piston rings actually do need a break in period to seat properly against the cylinder walls. In older engines the cam also needed to be broke in - not so with new technology. Now, there are two thoughts on this. 1. I'm going to keep the car forever and I want it to be like new when it has 100K miles on it. OR 2. I won't have this car when it has 80 - 100K miles on it and starts to smoke becasue of blowby from the rings never seating properly so I'll just beat it right now.

Just for the record, Sunday is our last scheduled autocross for the year and my G will have about 550 miles on it. I'M RACING IT! I am gonna dump the oil and put synthetic in it though.

Re: break in period

as long as you properly warm it up and gradually increase the RPMs, i don't think you need to really worry much. I mean its more about common sense, taking it to redline a couple times after a good warm up isn't gonna kill it but doing that constantly and its another story... its not that delicate of a car...

Re: break in period

Why would it be anything different then what the owner's manual says?

Re: break in period

i made a reward system for myself... careful driving till 400mi, at 400 i rewarded myself by doing one hasty run, then careful till 500 when i floored it once in low 3rd gear to 90mph, then careful till 600 when i floored it twice from 2nd, after 700 i rarely floored it, prob once every 50 miles. at 1200mi i tried my first run from the dig.. now im breaking all hell lose. haha its not the proper way but theres no way you can resist the temptation of the G's exhaust tone without pushing the car...
