Yokohama S. Drives!

 

Has anyone tried the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions yet? I'm also in the market for new tires. I've had the Yokohama S-drives and I've been pretty happy with them. Though they are not the ultimate performance tire. Dry traction is a lot lower than I had hoped but I realy don't realize that until I do the occasional autocross. The Potenzas are twice the price of the Hankooks so I'm looking for some reason to justify the price.

 

Haven't tried the Bridgestones but I did just put on a set of new Hankook Ventus V12 Evos. So far I'm happy with them. Initially thought the side wall flexed more than the Kumho's I had on there but it was because they were at 28 psi. At the recommended 35 psi the 19" Hankooks seem to handle well. Not autocross or track experience with these yet.

But here's my theory about tires for this car: It is going to eat any soft compound summer performance tire (at least my coupe 06 does) on the front in pretty short order and there is nothing you can do about it. And it doesn't matter how expensive the tires are, they're going to wear and feather on the inside.

Soooo, there is no way I'm paying twice as much for a big brand performance tire that is only going to give a marginal improvement in performance.

I'm going to the mountains to thrash the coupe on twisty roads in about two weeks. If I survive and remember I'll check back on this thread and give a review of the Hankooks.

 

kumho spt's are nice, but they eventually get crazy loud. just recently got the michelin pilot sport a/s plus's, ride and handling are nice, they were not cheap though.

 

if you race in any fashion tires are the number one limiting factor for performance. if your just going around town and you dont race its still good and important to have a nice all season on there. I have Kumho ecsta ASX- and i love them. i think they are a great tire for the price. i also heard great things about the Hankooks. I just purchased rims and got them wrapped in ventus v12 the summer tire, should be good. I also have a friend who drives a Z and he has yoko avid invigors and adores them. If your looking for a good tire that wont break the bank, you cant go wrong with kumho, yokohama, or hankook. and if you have the money to spend just get michelin Pilot sports. go to Tirerack.com they are a good place to order from and ship quickly

 

If all you do is drive back and forth to work and school, a 250$ tire isn't going to be any better than a 105$ tire with higher tread wear. In fact, it seems stupid to drop 1200$ on tires if all you do is daily drive it and not track it once in a while or drive on windy roads. Some of those performance tires have crappy tread wear and you'll be wondering what happened to them 8 months down the road.

 

On tire rack, the hankook evos have a treadwear rating of 280 and the next cheapest tires the general g-max has 480 and the price is nearly the same....
does anyone have any idea about the general tires?

YES! @ thumbs up on the Hankook EVO 12. I just paid $794 for all 4 tires shipped to my front door from discount tire direct, which also has no sales tax or shipping fees. You will not find them cheaper brand new unless you have a hook up.
I paid another $80 to have them mounted, balance and new valve stems. And another $84 to have a 4 wheel alignment done.
So all in all just over $900 for 4 new tires, mounted & balanced and an alignment. The best part is my car feels like it did the day I drove it out of the showroom. It feels 200% better then it did last week! Well worth the $$$ spent and the Hankook's got really good customer reviews, trust me I did my homework on these.
