3k on the clock and worried about oil consumption

Right before my mother's G35x hit 3k, I changed the oil for the first time. I rechecked the oil after about 300 miles after the oil change and I didn't notice any oil consumption,. but the oil has already turned into a darkish color not black, but dark. I'm worried that this engine is already showing sighns of blow-by.

Also, what make me more concearned is that one morning, before the fist oil change, I watched my mother pull away and saw some blue smoke leave the exhaust. I didn't put much thought into it because I figured the rings probably weren't sealed 100% yet.

I did a search and saw numerous threads about oil consumption and it's making me [censored] my pants. I swear, if this car does me wrong, I will never buy anything other don't TOYOTA again. I have 144k on my EXTREMELY ABUSED, EVERYDAY REDLINE Tocama and it doesn't consume a drop of 5w-30.

Do you think that this is nomal and I'm just being paranoid? In any case I'll be sure to check the oil frequently from now on.

BTW, I used an oem filter and mobil dino oil.
Edited by Mac8008 on 11/06/04 09:43 AM.

If you're that concerned, take it to the dealership. That's what warranties are for. The smoke could be because the car was still warming up and it's actually water vapor.

Have fun driving your boring Toyota appliance, i mean vehicle.

Well, it might be if you guys have experienced the same conditions. That's what I was really trying to find out

With your first few oil changes and low mileage, did your oil stay light in color for a long period of time?

Nah, it had color to it.

haha I agree. Toyota cars are very boring or at least cars any where close to the g35's segment. That's why I recomended this car to my mother. You can't beat toyota reliabiltiy though.

Just to let you know, I don't think my truck is boring. Maybe that's because my only other option is my integra. My 2wd, manual taco is fast considering what it is and handles great for being a truck.

Sounds like you're speculating about an oil consumption problem that may not even exist. I mean you didn't mention anything about your mother's G35 actually burning oil to the point it got low and you had to refill it. You can't go by the color and smoke in the exhaust. The only way to tell if there is a problem is to monitor the oil level and track how much it is consuming. If it's burning more than a quart per 1,000 miles, then its considered excessive oil consumption. If it's not, then its fine.

I had the same problem with my 04 when i first got it but the cunsumption stopped dead after the first oil change. I also have a 1998 toyota 4Runner that just ticked 190,000 on it's original brake PADS! yes pads... You're absolutely right about Toyota reliability (We've had 5 in my lifetime and all have gone well over 200K with less than $1K in total upkeep, excluding oil changes) but they simply don't build cars that are edgy enough for someone my age (23). I need something a little more ballsy than a Solara .

BMW owners say the same "appliance" crap about our cars too saying they're "just a rebadged Nissan blah blah no racing heritage blah blah blah" but I don't find myself paying $1K a year to keep my car on the road. My 3 series is a piece of crap and its only got 120K on it, the 4Runner looks and drives like it just rolled off the showroom floor with 190K. Talk is cheap.

funny you should mention that. We also have a 94 325i BMW with 154k. Nothing but problems that's why we switched over to nissan in hopes of better reliability.

A lot of people want a BMW just for the status, and once they buy one, they talk down about other car brands. They never mention the constant electrical gremlins or how their $43k 325i could get SPANKED by our cheaper G's. I think most G35 buyers aren't looking for status, they love the looks, value or sportiness of the G, and want Japanese reliability.

Hahahaha. Racing heritage? Our car is the Skyline in Japan. The Skyline has as much "heritage" as anything BMW has produced

my intentions weren't to start a thread for flaming bmw's. I'm sure bmw as a company goes back way longer than nissan does.

It's hard to beat bmw in terms of performance. I know from reviews that the g35 sadan can ceap up with a bimmer for about 8/10, but the bottom line is the 3 series will out perform it. This true for at least the sadan. It's hard to talk bad about bwm from a performance aspect considering they make cars like the M3.

Just because I can consider it a fact that many bmw's suffer from reliability issues especially the e36 and later 740, doesn't mean they don't know how to make a stylish, comfortable car that will perform.

I love BMWs and would have an M3 if I didn't have so much student loans, but the fact is that the only 3 series that can outrun a 6mt coupe is the M3 (both e36 and e46). The ZHP package is about equal to a pre-05 6mt sedan/coupe...we'll see what the new 3 series brings.
