Finally...1/4 mile times

It's not the car, it's the driver....I suck.

Temp. 65-69 degrees, sunny
Humidity - 60-70% (according to weather.com)
Abolute barometer 30.15 - 30.69 (don't know what this means)
Location: Beech Bend Speedway, Bowling Green, KY

04.5 Coupe 6MT
100% Stock
removed spare, rear tire pressure at 30psi

Total of 5 runs:
1) 15.17@96.50 (60' = 2.63)
2) 14.74@95.77 (60' = 2.36)
3) 14.89@95.83 (60' = 2.51)
4) 14.64@96.74 (60' = 2.36)
5) 14.47@95.42 (60' = 2.27) <------

I feel this car has a whole LOT more in it. I am dissapointed in my abilities to drive this car. I so badly wanted to get low 14's stock. Again, the car is capable of low, low 14's if not high 13's. All- in- all I had fun.

BTW - I barked 4th on every run....I LOVE THIS CAR.

How did I do?...

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

How were you running the car down the track... where you riding the clutch or just popping the clutch at a certain rpm... I think your runs were pretty good... especially your last run... Nice...

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

Yep. Chirped 4th on ALL 5 runs. I am surprised as you, but it felt good. Two spectator cam over after my 4th run and said "I'm impressed by your car...is it stock?". They said they heard me bark 3rd. Their jaw's dropped when I told them I chirped 4th...

The first 3 runs I bogged off the line. All runs, I shifted at redline (sometimes a split second after redline). I'm too scared to power shift because I don't think I am quick enough to shift before hitting fuel cut-off.

Jdbinspired:

First 3 runs I think I let off the clutch too soon causing low rpm launches and bogging. The 4th run was at around 3.5K rpm (I got more aggressive with the rpms because of the previous bogs) this resulted in MAD wheel hops. 5th run, I took the advise of others and feathered the clutch at around 2.5K. This worked better, but I'm still not happy with the 60'.

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

let that back tire pressure down to about 22-24lbs and dump the clutch at about 3 grand - you'll like the results.

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

Maybe you are imagining things with regards to chirping 4th.

I can run 14.4 all day and still not chirp third. Bone stock at 35psi w/ spare tire.

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

I played with the tire pressure on the 3rd run...letting it down to 30psi (I also discovered the RR was at 40psi!).

Does anyone know about starting in 2nd? Someone at the track told me to start in 2nd, but I am sckeptical about this? I'm sure the G's got enough torque to start in 2nd...

Anyone with experience with this?

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

mine will LOUDLY chirp 3rd every time. I guess if you're not red linin' it and shiftin' fast it might not. I've not tried into 4th - haven't gone that fast yet.

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

Your rear tires probably did not start at 40psi. With the excessive burn outs, it will cause your tire pressure to increase dramatically. When I auto-X, I start off at 45psi. By the end of the day, they will read 60psi.

The G's do have enough torque to start in 2nd, but not enough to give you great speed. I've ran with 12 second z's, and those guys always start in 1st.

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

Believe me, I was not imagining things. Chirping 3rd was no problem as I did that prior to the strip. 4th surprized me on the 1st run. But after that, I made sure to pay close attention to the other runs....sure enough I chirped ALL 5 runs. The only things I can think of was the reduced weight of the removed spare, the track was slick toward the end? (probably not), redlining 3rd will cause a chirpped 4th?. I do not credit my driving skills (as you can tell from my 60' times), but maybe I do have some shifting skills?? who knows, but it felt damn good.

I was/am proud of the power of this car and it's performance that day, but I still think I could have done better than 14.4

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

I've attempted riding my clutch... But the rush that you get from concentrating on the staging lights are kind of hard to do... By riding the clutch... Don't you guys also lose time since the car take's longer to get off the line... Which I guess evens out when you pop the clutch the spin tires all through 1st gear and then into 2nd...

What are your guys thoughts in feathering the cltuch...? Are your guys terms in feathering the same as riding the clutch... Which to me means burning the clutch... so you guys have that burning smell after runs...

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

What the elevation at the track? (Above sea level) ...the stock tires are hard to launch cuz they spin through 1st and into 2nd...as you improve your 60', your ET will improve. I have a 400rwhp G and my 60' still suffers cuz I have street tires. My best 60' at CalSpdWay on Friday was 2.145...my best ET was 13.444 at 107mph @1100ft above sea level...I know with drad radials, I'll hit 12's, no problem...good luck.

Wanna see mine?

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

I think feathering the clutch and riding the clutch may be the same thing.

I feathered the clutch on my last run and it seems to work best. I didn't smell anything different, but who knows.....the track stinks of rubber, oil, and burning clutches anyways.

Looking back, feathering the clutch is like when you do a controlled wheel spin. You ease out of it slightly until it engages and you get wheelspin (at this point I still have my foot on the clutch just in case the spinning gets out of control). This is probably the best way to launch...

Re: Finally...1/4 mile times

I don't know the elevation of the track. It's not posted on the website and it wasn't on the timeslip.

Bowling Green, KY 42104 if anyone knows how to find out. thanks.
