Dear Guys/Ladies,

My wife needs to drive my 04 coupe as I drive my kids to and from home on a daily basis. She is scraping my rims and need your advice on tire size to help stop this issue. I currently own two extra rims and will be able to add new tires once I find the correct ones up front. My current wheels are all 20X9 with Offset: +24mm and tires are Yokohama S Drive 255/30/20. I need wider tires on the front as the wheel is a bit larger than tires. On the back I have 285/30/20 which I wished I could use at front but I been informed they are just too wide. Any suggestion on size of tires for the front so this stops happening would be greatly appreciated? Thanks for you all who read this post.

Thats a tough one. IMO teach her how to park. It's no different then parellel parking. You dont use the cars in front of you and behind you to tell you when to stop, same should apply to curbs.
Why is she doing it?
Lack of care? lack of skill? I would tackle that issue before you try to find tires that are wider than the rims. I dont think that you will get much protection from that, given the low profile of the tires.

Tackle the source instead of masking it.

 

I don't think with our low profile tires, and while not running a tire much wider than the rim size it was designed for, it is all that possible to substantially protect your rims from being scratched if curbs/etc are being rubbed up on. The only real options would be to try to correct your wife's driving/parking or possibly going to some smaller rims so you can get a bit more tire as a buffer, but really hitting/rubbing the sides of your tires down is not all that safe anyway...

 

Not even spacers would save me here? Changing my wife would be easier than changing her ways. J.K.

 

Hahaha!! Spacers would only make it worse, putting the whole wheel further out towards the curb.

Just garnish her paychecks to pay for new wheels...she will learn to stop real quick

unfortunatly there isnt much you can do to protect wheels with low profile tires from damage when it comes to curbs ...except dont hit them.

 

How about a divorce?

I thought spacers would allow for a wider tire to be installed. I guess I was wrong with this idea. Since I have the new rims already I just wanted to change the tires but I might need to sell this set and order 20X8.5 which I know would work with my current tires. Once I buy another vehicle for her to use I will be saved. I do not understand how those small wires help, do they make noise if you hit them? Yes, divorce is a possibility but fear for my kids and of course my toys. Until then, I guess I must try to explain to her on how to park (Wish me the best!). Thanks once again to all of you!!!

 

Spacers just push the wheel out further and closer to the curb. Those curb feelers just make noise when they scrape the curb I believe. Ive never had them or known anyone with them.

 

Super popular back in the 70s... I think my dad had some on an old one of his cars.

 

My Grandpa actually had them when I was a kid, they vibrated through the bodywork pretty good, lol.

I understand that spacers make wheel go out but doesn't that mean that I can add bigger tires as there is extra space between wheel and any rubbing parts? Sorry but I never had spacers in my life but thought this is how they can be used.
P.S.
Those wire parts would not work for me as they would make car look a bit cheap in my opinion.
