Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
What are the differences of brakes between what you get from a 6mt coupe (brembo) and the standard brakes which comes on a 5AT coupe?
Is one better than the other? Is one more expensive than the other?

Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
Truth be said, the only difference is that the Brembos are painted gold and have that pretty red logo on them that really sets them off and makes the G look sportier! J/k, from what I've read I take it that the Brembos are just more durable and resistant to fade. That doesn't mean the braking distance is less than that of the 5AT coupe. They're definitely more expensive, otherwise they wouldn't have been dropped on the '05 6MT. Go to tirerack and see for yourself how much the Brembo kit for the G goes for.
Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
Excuse me, but Finiti35 is full of balony. When I was buying my car, there were no 6MTs on the lot, so I drove a 5AT sedan and then a 5AT coupe. The brakes, IMO, had no feel and were far too grabby. I came close to not buying the car because of those brakes. However, my salesman convinced me that the Brembos were superior, and from my past experiences, I believed him. I'm glad I did. My opinion has not changed. I have driven sedan loaners on 2 occasions, and they had the same brakes I remember from my test drives. The Brembos, have a true linear feel are fade free (I don't track) and are very powerful. They are the best brakes I have ever had on an automobile, bar none.
The '05s brakes, while better than the old 5AT brakes, are no match for the 4/2 pot Brembos. They are transplants from the FX SUV. The Brembos were removed for cost purposes only. Nissan has chosen to keep the Brembos on the 350Z Track and 35th Anniversary models. This is a true sports car brake in the fashion of Porsche and etc. Anybody who says differently doesn't know what he is talking about.
IMHO, Infiniti made a mistake by removing them, or at least not making them an option. For me, not having the Brembos would have been a deal breaker.
End of Speech.

I agree, I just bought an '04 Coupe 6MT. To me, the interior upgrades of the '05 were not worth giving up the Brembos.

Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
Brembos were critical to me buying the 6mt. Other than performance, there is this thing about being able to spot a 6mt over a 5AT on the road. Now all 05 MT and AT would look identical on the road... nothing sets them apart...
Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
The normal brakes have no feel. After test driving a touring 350Z vs a Track 350Z (Brembo equipped), I knew I HAVE to get a track version. To me the G35c Brembo's feel a little better, maybe because I was on a testdrive and concerned with other things.

Ouch, didn't you see the "j/k" part of my post? And it's spelled 'baloney' by the way.
On topic, the info on the brakes is off the Canadian Infiniti site
# Front: 297 x 23 mm (11.7 x 0.9-inch) ventilated discs
* Available (M6 Coupe): Brembo® 4-piston calipers and 325 x 30 mm (12.8 x 1.2-inch) ventilated discs.
# Rear: 292 x 15 mm (11.5 x 0.6-inch) ventilated discs
* Available (M6 Coupe): Brembo® 2-piston calipers and 323 x 23 mm (12.7 x 0.9-inch) ventilated discs.
Now if I remember correctly, the Brembo calipers are fixed piston and OEM are floating design single piston (sorry if my terminology is off..). As you see, the Brembo rotors are bigger and better ventilated and therefore they're superior under heavy braking, much less prone to fade, etc. I don't feel like looking up the 60-0 ft braking distance of the 5AT vs 6MT but I tend to believe it's not all that huge of a difference.
As far as the sedan brakes being grabby, I just recently got to drive a 5AT sedan and I agree with you though there was no 6MT I could compare it to. Same thing with the 5AT coupe, but I guess for my driving style the brakes are still more than good enough. I also agree that the Brembos should have been kept at least as an option on the '05. They were a nice way to tell the 5AT and 6MT apart.

Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
A lot of the stopping power has to do with the tires, ABS system, and the braking system in unison. The only advantage the brembos give you is the better braking system. The stopping distances are relatively equal according to the tests I've seen but the fade and braking feel is noticeably worse in the non-brembo system.

Re: Difference of Brakes on the 6MT and the 5AT
I completely agree with everything EZZ said, and here's what I like to add:
The Brembos do feel pretty good, but overall pedal travel is VERY short which is fine, but longer pedal travel would allow for more progessive stops. With the way the Brembos are setup, the brakes are always working a bit harder than they "feel", and I believe the Coupe 5AT is even worse.
P.S. It's not balony or baloney, it's bologna.
