Valvoline Oil Sucks

Sike, it probably doesn't suck but my VQ sure doesn't like it.

I've always used mobile 1 full or Castro EDGE Syntec full. Well, last oil change, I used Valvoline Synpower full synthetic 5w30 since it was on sale. 30 bucks for 5 quarts and pure one "high performance" oil filter. After a thousand miles I checked my dipstick and it was below the low mark. I was freaking out because I never burned this much oil before. Usually only a half to 1 quart every 4000 miles or less. So I drained the oil on a clean bucket and it turns out, I burned almost 2 quarts. I was freaking out! And it was dark already. So I put the oil back in and added two quarts of 5w 30 Mobile 1 full sythetic and after 1200 miles I drained the oil for an early oil change and this time I burned through a little over half a quart of oil after adding mobile 1

I am using Castro EDGE Syntec 10w 40 right now and so far so good and registering well on the dipstick. Definitely don't think it was my engine but the oil I was using.

So yeah, any of you guys ever try Valvoline before? I'm also using K & N Oil filter right now. It was 14 bucks. Every try that too? Definitely watching the types of oil I use now.

2003 Infiniti G35 6mt with over 100k on it.

I am a firm believer of an OEM Oil filter, and I religiously use Motul 8100 10W30. I notice a big differnece at my oil change intervals. As far as I know, the VQ motors are very sensitive to oils. I have had great usuage out of the Motul

Motul is excellent oil. That is all I use on my bike. 5100 for the streets, 300v for the track. I swear by it and I love the smell! I've never used it in a car though. Maybe next oil change I'll check it out.

You drained the oil then put the same dirty oil back in? Sounds like a bad idea to me. I don't care how clean the bucket is.

i have been putting mobile 1 5w30 fully synthetic with the mobile 1 filter and i was curious one day and pulled the dipstick out at 500 miles and the oil was almost getting to the black shade which i thought was very odd but i never had a problem with it burning off for all 3000 mile intervals

This is bad too...

also, I think it was the oil weight changes that made the differences.

First IIRC, you use 10.30, then you want to save some money and use 5.30

stick with whats working and regularly moniter your oil levels.

Well a 40 weight oil is going to have a higher viscosity at operating temp than a 30 weight. Same with the 5 winter viscosity vs the 10 winter rating.

OP is not really comparing apples to apples here.

Valvoline does suck. I've used it maybe twice in a previous car. The oil runs noisy and hot and burns easily. I don't like mobil 1 that much either. I and the rest of the guys over at myg37 have been very happy with pennzoil platinum or ultra. You can find a 5 quart jug for around $25-$30.

I'm sorry, i was inaccurate. Both mobile and Valvoline was 5 w 30 weight oil.

Same price regardless of what weight oil you get. All 8.19 a quart over here for full synthetic.

Yeah, it probably wasn't a good idea to dump the oil back in but I only drove it for 1200 miles with at least 2 quarts of mobile 1 5 w 30 and it showed little burn off. Remember, with just Valvoline only, in less than 1000 miles it burned almost 2 quarts. That's bad.

Motul FTW!. I am very pleased with it. I use Motul for all my fluids, except for the factory Nissan tranny fluid.

Interesting. I usually put Castrol Edge in my car but last oil change I put Valvoline in and noticed that I had consumed about a quart of oil. My engine has never consumed oil befor.

These motors seems to consume certain oils more than others.

I was using GC (german castrol for you lay-men) and it was blowing through that stuff in my VQ altima.

Switched to mobil 0w40 and cut consumption in half. The car used oil to begin with, but used alot when doing intervals of GC.

Using OEM filter and Castrol GTX 5w30 in the G now.

OP: Do you ever visit BITOG?
