winter wheel problem

Ok, so I went to install my winter tire and wheel package today - PROBLEM. I bought the ASA JH3 wheels. The fronts don't just bolt on. Anyone know what that bushing and bolt are on the front rotors between two of the lugs? The JH3 wheels don't clear whatever that is. This late in the year in Nebraska I didn't want to fart around with trying to send these back to TireRack and get something else, so I busted out the die grinder and made a recess in the wheel to clear that bolt. I had to grind a lot more than I would have liked to.

I am not to thrilled with TireRack for not knowing this was a problem when selling me these wheels - NEAL!

Just thought I 'd share my troubles to try and save others the same headache.

Re: winter wheel problem

There is no problem. Remove the bolt that is in the way. It is a factory bolt to ensure the fronts and rears go on the correct way at the factory. It has no function. You should have asked before taking a grinder to the wheels - I hope you didnt throw off the balance.

Been there - done that... (not the grinder part)

Re: winter wheel problem

yeah recheck the balance on those wheels just in case...

and I KNOW for a fact it's been mentioned on this site what that bolt is for, and I'm almost sure that the owner's manual states it too.

Can't blame tirerack for this one.. they should know, but still, you can't blame them for not knowing.

Re: winter wheel problem

yea those bolts are to differentiate the front from the rears on the stock rims... i'm sure tiretrack knew about it but probably slipped their mind in telling you or assumed you'd know to take them off. I think before you do something drastic next time, you check on the boards or the manual...

Re: winter wheel problem

Yup... just take them off...

You gotta take them off to put on any aftermarket rims. Now, just make sure you know which ones are the rears, and which ones are the fronts!

Re: winter wheel problem

guess I got a little hasety huh? i still don't get the point. the tires are different sizes front and back. they shouldn't get mixed up. the size is right on the tire and they are physically different sizes.
I know this is my fault but it still pisses me off. I have worked on countless cars and have never seen such a thing.

Re: winter wheel problem

this is done in custom machinery quite often, so two parts cannot be assembled the wrong way. its called "goof proofing".

Re: winter wheel problem

I'm the one that sold you the package (Neal). There is a locating pin on the front hub of the car that you need to remove (see pic above). I apologize if you were not aware that pin was there. This has been mentioned many times on the board and is stated in the owners manual. 350Z's have the same thing.

Remember, you can contact me at any time to ask questions if you have a problem. I would have appreciated that first, rather than the message to the board above.

Re: winter wheel problem

my intention was not to smear you on the board. I had to get the them installed on Sunday and could not have called you.

As far as this being mentioned before, I am a newer member and have not read about it. Yes Yes I know about the search option. What would I have entered? "little bolt and bushing thingy on the front brake rotors" come on guys, I'd have never found the thread on this topic if I spent all freakin' day looking. As far as the owners manuel - it never occured to me to look. It doesn't show you how to change breaks. That kind of stuff is in service manuals.
I'm not upset with "Neal". I do think that if it is something that the sales staff is aware of that they should provide as much helpful information up front as possible. I would think that it should be a note in the TireRack system so that as soon as they enter the type of vehicle it gives a reminder to tell the customer.
Who I'm pissed off at is Infiniti/Nissan. If they need this in place to prevent errors, maybe they should be hiring assembly workers that are qualified to do a job without an idiot proof pin to keep them from installing a rear tire on the front of a vehicle.

Done venting now
