How necessary is a tune?

Hey all,

I'm ready to buy some ART pipes or Berk/FI HFC's but before I make the purchase and install them, i know that i will be needing a tune pretty soon (after installing the test pipes or hfc's). If i get art pipes or HFC's i will have replaced the cats, y pipe, and exhaust. So how necessary is a tune? Ive searched that I will be throwing up a check engine light or check engine soon. I know I will probably get better gas mileage with a tune but what are other disadvantages of not getting a tune? Has anyone replaced cats, y-pipe, exhaust, and intake with aftermarket parts and hasn't gotten a tune?

Thanks in advanced

they have these O2 sensor bung extensions that place the sensor a bit away from the stream, its supposed to help with the CEL issue. A tune is recommended if you want to make the most of your mods.

I may be wrong, but with more breather mods, you're just going to keep running leaner and leaner with the addition of each breather mod.

Dont waste your money on a tune yet. Finish with your mods and drive your car lightly then get a tune... unless gas mileage is a HUGE deal to you and worth the money for a tune

Also you'll have to retune your car every time you put a new mod on to get the most of it.

ive done all the breather mods except exhaust, but the cats were out so not a big difference and i was running between 12 and 15 afr.. depending on your ECU you should be fine. i have an 05.

and a tune wont fix you throwing a CEL.

like KidStealthG35 said, wait till you finish all your mods, then get a tune.

Hey man, I also forgot to mention. If you are real serious about your car and going to keep messing with it for a long time, check out the Osiris - Tuner pack... you can buy eTunes for 50 bucks a piece and UpRev will basically TUNE your car for you. Not as good as a dyno, but dyno tunes get expensive and they are a hassle and time consuming, just something to look into.

Also, you dont have to pay for the eTune, it is just a convenience, you can build your own ROM and tune it yourself, so everytime you slap on a new mod, tune it yourself. Instant results...

The Osiris - Tuner package is 700 bucks new, but sometimes you can find used ones.

getting a tune will allow the tuner to turn off the CEL.

If I were you, i'd get all the mods you want to get first then get a tune..

I'd say that $700 package is something for more experienced tuners.. your average guy won't be capable of doing his own tunes without doing some research and careful practice, and knowing exactly what to do.. a lot goes into determining how to tune your vehicle.

Def could use and benefit from a tune. Will free up extra horsepower and like you said better mpg... Enough said..

The tuner package is for more experienced tuners, but it allows room for learning. You can still get a 50 dollar eTune with it that way you dont have to tune it yourself, but you can always learn to tune, its not THAT difficult.

If Joe is smart enough to go with the BERK'S HFCs their extensions are built in, so I found out.

I had all my previous mods and didn't throw our favorite "Check Engine Soon" error code until I installed my BERK'S which made me run lean. Getting a Osiris tune and picking up another 24 RWHP and 12.5 LBS of torque was worth the cost of the tune + the error code is no longer showing up. Finish doing your mods and then get a tune!
