NAV USAGE
NAV USAGE
I should be getting my car in a matter of weeks.
I have a 6speed coming with Nav .. .
My question is ... how usefull is it generally for a person who does not travel very much, but occasionally gets lost
and drives essentially to work everyday and home.
More so what I am asking is ... does anyone regret spending the 3400 dollars (CAD) on the nav and would your advice be to not to get it, which would screw up my order, in exchange obviously for a cheaper msrp, a longer wait period (MAYBE 3 MONTHS AGAIN! )
and use the money for hmmmm .... rims and tires, CAI, lowering springs etc?
whaddya all think?

Re: NAV USAGE
I only got mine since the car on the lot had it. I reasoned that even if I didn't use it all that much that 1) it has a way-high cool factor; and 2) it helps the resale value of the car (if I ever sell it).

Re: NAV USAGE
The Navi is pretty cool. It also gives you info on the place you are going to (ie Phone Numbers). Besides that navi giving directions, the G35s warning comp. is wired to the LCD. If you have a door ajar, the Car warns you on the LCD with a big bright red sign. Same with the e-brake ect...

Re: NAV USAGE
you can't forget about the leaf. You can get an estimate on your gas millage, how many miles to empty, when you mino services like oil and filter change, avg speed and a couple other things.
I'm glad I got it, I was about to not get it but that would of been a regret.
the only thing that sucks about it is you can't enter an address while moving. Anybody know what wire to cut so I can enter addresses while on the roll?

Re: NAV USAGE
I think all cars that come with the NAVI have to put it in PARK to program it. Because it’s a liability thing, meaning if anybody ever crashes the car they could blame it on the NAVI and sue the car company for a ridiculous amount of money!
Re: NAV USAGE
You do not want me and I do not want you to be entering an address on the nav while driving. Presumably you will be on a cell phone at the same time...otherwise why would you want to enter an address while moving? It is jus too damn difficult. The toggle button is not very accurate.
Re: NAV USAGE
it doesn't have to be me or you. It could be your significant other, like a wife, gf, son, daughter, dog or friend.
I get what you mean about having some untalented idiot not paying attention to the road while entering an address though.

Re: NAV USAGE
You can't enter a new address while moving, but you can access any addresses saved in your address book, as well as any recently entered addresses. You can also enter new addresses at an intersection while at a full stop, without having to put the car in Park or pulling the parking brake. It shouldn't take you more than 1 or 2 stop lights to get an address in, especially in smaller states (fewer towns to cycle through).
Basically, you can always set your destination to Home or Office, etc, on the fly, assuming you've saved them in your Address Book. If you're heading into unfamiliar territory, just enter the new info while your G is warming up (you don't run her cold, do you?). The only problem is when you're on the highway and suddenly decide you want to use the Point of Interest feature to find a restaurant. You'll just have to pull off the road for a minute. But that's not much of a sacrifice to prevent you from swerving into me, right?
Oh, but the one real annoyance is that your passenger can't enter the details while you're driving. It'd be nice if there were an extra little joystick thing on the passenger side door that always works for those occassions, although I suppose that might not stop some maniac from lunging all the way over while driving. It's probably better this way.

Re: NAV USAGE
You can only select from the first 5 address book entries.. it won't let you scroll down while moving. You don't have to set the parking break.. it just has to sense that the car is not moving (less than 2mph does it, I think).
Some of the stuff does work on the fly.. such as quick stops. You can find a fast food restaurant or a gas station nearby w/o having to stop to work the nav. But stuff like entering a street name (which requires more concentration) is disabled while in motion.
I believe it has to do with new regulations. They're not doing this to us because they feel like it, they're doing it because the government told them to.
I hear Volvo actually has steering-wheel mounted controls for their nav system.

Re: NAV USAGE
there is an adress book to that can be used while the car is in motion. Befor i leave i just punch in the adress and boom its up and into the adress book. It also lets you use little icon thigys on adress so u can see them easly on the map. I am so happy i got the nav. I would probaly be dead in a ditch some were if i did not have it i get lost so much.
