Radar Detectors....Illegal?
Radar Detectors....Illegal?
Unfortunately, radar detectors are illegal in VA/DC. I have been interested in purchasing one for a while now (Escort 8500) and was wondering if anyone has a radar detector in a state where they are illegal and has been so called 'detected'. I plan on purchasing one with VG-2 Immunity (radar detector detector) so that I cannot be detected. Can I still be spotted by the police even with this VG-2 detection?? I heard from some people here in VA they fine you if caught as well as take away the device....
I was under the impression that detectors (not jammers) were passive...i.e. do not produce any emmissions of their own. If that is the case, how can you be 'detected' having one?
Install remote sensors, and keep the main unit hidden. Just make sure it is a completly passive device.

Check out Speed Zones .
According to them, the VG-2 RDD is not sold anymore, and the current RDD is Spectre III. The company making Spectre has plans to keep it updated, so I doubt any radar detector will be completely immune to it.
As far as taking away the device, according to the Virginia State Code , radar detectors may be collected for evidence, but if you ask for it back, they must return it.

While they used to confiscate or seize, I believe that presently by
policy they no longer do so.
Years ago a co-worker of mine was headed from MD to Dulles in VA and was pulled over for operating a Radar Detector at 5:00 AM. As I recall, the fine was steep. (Like $80 IIRC)
