Buy local if you can so that you can see all any rash/tread remaining/overall condition in person.

Barring that, any legit seller shouldn't mind taking extra pics if needed - especially if needed for more detail/verification. Paying through paypal by credit card seems to be the best way for double coverage. Never pay using the gift option - the fees saved are insignificant compared to the safety of using a cc and having it's own separate purchase protection.

I always make sure to arrange to pay right before the seller would ship so I wouldn't have to wait for confirmation of shipping. If the seller hems & haws on making time for shipping after payment, set one final ship date and cancel payment if it's not met. Tracking AND insurance is a must for me too whether it be USPS/Fedex/UPS. USPS is usually cheaper IMO.

Lastly, use the seller's itrader/previous posts history as a barometer of the chances of him screwing you over or not. It's not 100% foolproof but should be 97% effective - sort of like a condom bwahahaha.

Cliff's Notes:
Be sensible and use common-sense. More protection is always better - the little upfront costs in time/effort/money usually pays itself off at the end. Don't be afraid of the Classifieds forum. The vast majority of sales go through without a hitch.

PayPal is safe. I've bought and sold dozens of things using PayPal and whenever I had a problem I easily resolved it with PayPal.
