Hello all G35 owners, I have a 2006 6MT with 70,000+ Miles.
When I shift into 2nd, I hear a metal clinking metal type of sound. It isn't a harsh nasty grinding sound, but it's just like metal tapping metal, pretty loud. Any other gear shift, it feels like, just shifting with a "rubber padding", so a soft normal cushiony shift. Any idea why is this?

I can hear a metallic sound when I shift any gear in my 06 6MT with 86k miles on it. Only hear it when the windows are down. Just sounds like shift forks and gears moving to me. Made the same sound when I bought it with 75k on it. No change in 11k miles. No problems with performance. Shifting feels normal.

N80...you might have the axle click. search it, there's a DIY fix.

XternaL you might have the same problem, but yours sounds like it might be something else.

Mine is definitely not axle click. I can stop, roll down the windows, turn the car off, push in the clutch and work through the gears and there is mechanical noise through all the gears. Might not be the same as what the OP has.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my car.

Is it possible that what everyone is hearing isn't the trans at all but the throwout bearing? The older they get the more noise they make cause they go dry. Every time you change gears they'd be making a noise and finally a chatter before freezing up. To keep your 6 MTs happy I'd also start using synthetic fluid if you haven't already, it coats better and isn't subjected to heat like Nissan OE fluid.

As for me i know my throwout bearing is going out..... and my clutch but i wasn't sure if thats what was causing the sound so just wanted to make sure. Maybe i am just scared the previous owner didn't take care of the car and the tranny might be ****ed, but anyways Exedy clutch kit + nismo flyhwheel being installed this weekend i'll keep an update and see if i the noise will go away.

Ok, so i found a video that makes the similar sound i hear when shifting into second. Its towards the end of the video at 48 seconds where he downshifted and you hear a clank sound....that's ALMOST exactly how it sounds when i shift from 1st into 2nd gear. I would've recorded myself but my camcorder is being stupid.

I've had my stock trans replaced at 23,000 and I'm only at 33,000 as of now. both trans have had the same sound shifting from first to second and occasionally from second to third.. i was paranoid at first too but its normal. you should be able to tell if its localized to the trans or not.. also when the trans isnt warmed up it tends to be louder.. your probably fine
