Uh Oh...What now?

Hi there,

This is my first post...Hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.

I have a 2006 G35x sedan. 65K miles. Have had it for about a year and a half. Driving home tonight, at a red light...steam began pouring out from under my hood. My temp gauge spiked and the service engine soon light came on. The steam was coming out of the front corner of the hood, only on the passenger side. When I got out to check the car, I noticed coolant on the hood and on the passenger side of the car. When I lifted the hood, that same spot under the hood was drenched with coolant and I heard massive boiling.

My first question is...Are there any likely known issues with the 06 G35x?

Second...I had the car in for 60K tune up in May. I then brought the car in last week for squealing brakes and because during an oil change (not at dealer), the tech told me my belts were cracked...which supposedly had just been replaced by the dealer in May (I confirmed on the receipt). So they sprayed the brakes to fix the squeal and told me my belts were fine. Like I said, that was a week ago. Is it reasonable to expect them to notice a problem in the general vacinity of the belts they were checking?

I did notice that it seemed like my fan was running more since I picked my car up last week. I couldn't tell if it was abnormal or not. I thought it was just because I was running the AC. Then this happens. Any thoughts?

One last note...I checked the oil and that looks clean. Hope that's a good sign.

I appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Rob

Sorry to be the first to say this (which is shocking for this forum) but it sounds like a blown head gasket and warped the heads.

Best of Luck!

^^Dude don't freak out the OP, what are you basing you comment on? All he's describing is a coolant leak which more than likely is a hole in a radiator hose or a bad radiator. It's ridiculous comments like this that are contributing to the downfall of this forum as the premiere source of info on all things G.

OP check your hoses, the main upper radiator hose is on the passenger side of your car which would explain why you had massive coolant leakage there. Your motor should be fine as long as you didn't try to drive it after it overheated. It doesn't take long with our aluminum blocks to cause damage when they overheat.

Thanks I appreciate the info. Hope it's not the head gasket. Wouldn't the oil be contaminated if it was? I've babied this car since I got it...only had 42K on it then....mostly highway driving the past year and a half. What would cause a blown head gasket?

I just think it's weird that I brought it in for a tune up in May...then again to be looked at last week...then this happens.

I live about two miles from the dealership. If I fill it with coolant do you think it's ok to drive the car to the dealer myself. Easier than calling for a tow...but I don't want to cause more damage.

Where did you get this....^....idea? That's not even close to what he describes. Sounds more like a blown radiator or at least a hose. This happened to me with my last Z on the way to Vegas at the Baker grade, radiator exploded....both side tanks. Costly trip!

Guys calm down, I am basing it on the fact that exactly what he describes happened to a friend of mine not long ago and it was a head gasket. The blown hose and over-heat was all related to his head gasket going south. Now I did not mean to scare the OP at all and you can see from my post history that I know a good deal about cars and I am not part of this forums downfall (if anything I have tried to add logical and reasonable responses). If he finds out otherwise then of course that's wonderful news but do not be so quick to assume what I stated is not a very real possibility.

Best of luck,
Jason

If you heard boiling then also check your coolant mixture... you mentioned you took it to a non dealer shop... some of those places are shadey when they see money, and you notice your car always needs new work afterwards.

If it has too much water youll get boiling sounds and overheating happens much faster whitch would cause the fans to work in overdrive to keep it cool.

you also mentioned it happened right after picking it up

i hope its something as simple as that and goodluck

First rule of over-heat is 'do not drive' until it can be properly diagnosed, you never know what type of damage has been caused or what further damage could be caused. You can fill with some distilled water since it's not winter and see if it just leaks out but I would not run the engine.

Again, best of luck.

Time to change the hoses anyways. Find some silicone ones on the 'For Sale' section of this forum.

Stupid question but...if the coolant was properly mixed, would you ever hear boiling? I bought the car "certified" and have had all maintenance performed at the same dealership. They are a luxury used car dealer...and I did some homework on them prior to buying. Had good reviews...but I'm getting a bad vibe from them.

About a year ago, I smelled burning coming from the brakes. They said I had a frozen caliper which they replaced along with the pads. A couple months later the smell came back so I brought it back. They called me at work and told me I need new pads. When I pointed out they just put new pads on it, there was silence on the phone and the guy said he'd double check that and call me back. When he called back he said he was thinking of a different Infiniti that needed new pads and my pads were fine. I thought that was odd and ever since have been a little suspect of them. But they're close and I want to trust them. The next closest Infiniti dealer is about 40 minutes away.

Only 1` Infiniti dealer in NH. About 1 hr away. I go to my local Nissan dealer. Great work, much lower labor rates.
