Uknown noise that goes away with acceleration and deceleration

Hi, I recently re-registered although before I wasn't active. Anyways on Sunday (9/25/11) I got in my car to run to the store (hadn't driven it all weekend) and I noticed a strange vibration or possibly knocking noise that goes away randomly and also when I accelerate and/or press the gas quickly (jolting the car slightly) Its not present at idle or at least not that I can hear. The noise only occurs when driving. I haven't tested for it on highway speeds just driving between 25-45 mph, its less prevalent at the higher speeds. I haven't found any particular rpm range that it occurs. Last week I did have all the tires replaced but there was no noise till Sunday. There are no lights that come on (check engine, oil, ect) and the car has had very regular maintenance (although it is due for an oil change). Less then 50k miles, and no major mechanical problems in the history I am the second owner, the first owner did not drive the car daily except in the summer. It is a 03 coupe with sports package. I did find a video on someone else's post that sounds similar however its not exactly the same noise and it only occurs while driving not during idle. https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...maybe-tdi.html The first video in this post is the closest to the noise I can find. All the fluid levels are good too and there is no overheating or strange reving. I searched quickly on the forums for similar but was unable to find. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, I want to know if its something I can do myself or if I need to get it to a mechanic ASAP. Thank you for your time.

[QUOTE=dsig111;6137540]Hi, I recently re-registered although before I

the video you posted has the noise on idle and I say that is a rod knock..check your oil to see if normal and also look for metallic particles on your dip stick....what weight OIL are you using...and last can you take your own sound video?:

Its 30 weight oil and there is no metal that I can see after checking several times the dipstick. Like I said it doesn't happen at idle, I tried to get the sound with my phone while driving but the common noises outside are louder. I me the noise is feint enough not to be hear with the windows up even. I can only consistently hear it when I have my windows down and there is minimal traffic near me. I will keep trying but so far no luck on the capture of the noise itself.

Ok, I think I discovered the problem. I got my car on a lift today cause I decided I was going to change the oil and check for metal then (needed oil change anyways). When I drained the oil aside from what was in the filter I had maybe 1 ltr. come out if I was lucky, now odd thing is I had no oil pressure lights come on nor did multiple checks of dipstick (I check at least once a month) did it ever say anything but full. So I had some serious oil consumption but I could not spot any leaks from underneath nor from the engine compartment. Also there are no oil stains in my space that I park my car. I know I saw something about oil consumption problem so I guess I will have to look into it more. I already checked with the local infiniti dealership for any outstanding TSB/Recalls and only thing I have is the air bag recall. I finished changing the oil and drove it for about 30 minutes and the sounds have disappeared. I am just shocked that the dipstick was so wrong for me (I always checked after the car sat overnight).

The 03 isnt a year commonly associated with OC.
It is mostly the rev UP (05-07) MTs

I know I had an 05 and ended up having to getting rid of it do to some issues, but I couldn't help myself when I found an 03 sports package with low miles. I haven't driven it hard but to be honest 3k of the 5k miles since last oil change were highway (I normally change it every 3-4k but I moved and took a while to find a self service shop with lifts, since I no longer have an area to put my car on jack stands anymore).
I don't drive hard for the most part, but occasionally I get tempted to put those civic kids in their place.

If you only had 1 liter come out then surely your motor is going to have some issues down the road. Fill it back up and start saving for a new motor down the road plus labor. The vehicle has complimentary oil consumption courtesy of nissan. Does not matter what year your vehicle is since many other years have had oil consumption as well. It is much more common on 05-07 6mt vehicles but can occur on other years and Automatic as well.

Well usually there is about a liter in the filter too and it had oil in it still, I doubt I did serious damage since it has only gone 2 miles since I started hearing the noise. I will change the oil again in 1000 miles and see if there is metal and maybe pull the valve cover to look.

Send your oil sample to dyson labs or find other oil analysis labs and they will tell you the level of metal in the oil and how the oil breakdown is. I think it cost like $25 ish
