I believe that would be first 1000, although most car dealers say that new cars these days don't need to be "broken-in".

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I subscribe to the break-in scedule in the owner's manual. I figure it'll pay off in the long run.

It suggests for the first 1200 miles (2000 kilometers) to avoid constant speed, fast or slow, and not to rev past 4k.
To not accelerate at full throttle
To avoid quick starts
To avoid hard braking
To not tow for the first 500 miles.

i am trying to keep in under 4ooo rpm for the first 1500 miles. i accidentally went over twice (once to 4400ish when i wanted to hear the engine rev in neutral, and once to 4800ish when I was playing with the manual shift down and down shifted). I guess the longer you break a car in the better.

on newer vehicles we always recommend that our customers break the car in between 1500-2000 miles. we won't do nitrous or forced induction installations on cars with less miles than that. on our own race cars, however, it doens't matter because the motor will be pulled after a few times at the track. hope this helps.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but your car gets redlined before you even get it As sad as it is, I know this first hand, because I watched it happen...

I worked at an import yard at the docks in Tacoma, WA. Big boats would pull into dock and off of them would come all the new cars fresh from Japan. I worked mostly at the Mitsubishi lot (right there on the dock within a half mile were also Toyota, Honda and Nissan import lots) Anyhow...

The cars would come off the boat in containers, someone would then drive the car out of the container and about 1/2-3/4 mile and into the building I was working in. There my team and I would take all the white plastic protective film off the hood, roof and trunk and inspect the cars for shipping damage. We would then reapply the film and the car would be driven about another 1/2-3/4 mile to either a storage lot (for local cars) or to awaiting car carrier semi trailers or train cars (for long distance cars).

All of the cars that came through that building were "presales" meaning someone had ordered them, they actually had window stickers that said "Purchased for John Doe, 1111 mystreet, anytown USA..." The problem was that they would hire high school and college kids to drive the cars around the lot... Well you can imagine what happened... If not let me tell you... Brand new 3000gt VR4 Spyder rolls out of the container. Less than 2 actual driven miles on it and BAM the kid hits the gas and redlines it for a good 1/4 mile then slows down to 0 in another 1/4 mile... Into the bay it goes... Off goes the motor... Ugggg... That's right in the time frame of about 5 minutes, this brand new car (now with 2.5 miles on it) has been started, after sitting on a ship for God knows how long, immediately redlined for a good 12-15 seconds then pulled into a bay and immediately shut off... OUCH...

Anyway the thing is, it happened at every lot! I was a rover with a temp company doing this kind of work so I know, because I was at EVERY lot... I saw it happen to the 300ZXs, the VR4 300GTs, the NSXs (yes even the NSXs) any car that was relatively high performance had this happen.. it was SICK and TWISTED being a car guy I know now what the damage may have been, but it happened and continues to happen from what I hear from friends that still work at these lots.

Like I said I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I had to tell ya... So when you look at that odometer on the "new car" your about to buy know that the 3-10 miles on the car were probably the hardest most intense 3-10 miles that car will EVER see... Even if you "ordered it" to prevent this type of thing from happening!

On a positive note some of the top tuners in the US, state that "there is no need for dreak in periods now days..." In fact I have seen several tuners buy a car off the lot take it to their shops and imediately put it on a Dyno for Baseline power pulls! Granted before going ***** out they probably let the car warm up and such and when they are done they let the car Idle and go through a short cool down period (unlike the boys how did it at the docks )
