Miles till empty on Nav Screen in a G35 coupe

Hi, I have a 2003 G35 Coupe with navigation. I am curious. When you fill up the tank & reset it, what is the reading in the miles to empty box in the nav screen? I typically get 335-350. This can't be right since our tanks hold 20 gallons & our Gs get about 20mpg. So it should read about 400 miles till empty... I know that I fill up my tank every time. Also my gas gage never shows full. always 2 lines below the full line... thanks...

With the way gas prices have been I typically fill up at half a tank. But then again, I currently live walking distance from my job and only drive a couple times per week for maybe 75 miles total, so I tend to stretch out refilling to 2-3 weeks at a time.

But when I have run the tank low I was typically in the area of 335-350 as well.

While on a road trip to Chicago last weekend I pulled into a gas station with one, yes one, mile left to go showing on the Nav screen. I felt pretty good about this mastery of fuel management - until I was only able to pump 17.7 gallons into the tank.

So either the Nav "miles to go" is as accurate as a wind-up Mickey Mouse watch, or my gas tank won't hold a full twenty gallons.

I'm curious if the Nav system is set to show zero gallons at the same point in time that the car's "Dumb Light" clicks on warning you of low fuel. It certainly sounds that way based on what Irrelevant has said. It would also make sense since it would effectively prevent people from driving dangerously close to empty.

I find that my 06 Nav is not that accurate when it comes the the 'miles to go' feature. It said I had 40 miles left but when I filled up the tank there was about 4 gallons left so I really don't pay attention to this.

I know I generally get 20-22 mpg so when I reach about 340 miles or so I got about 4 gallons left and thats when I fill up normally.

I use the fuel economy gauge all the time on the freeway. Easy way to monitor how hard you driving and saves gas when needed.

In my case, the low fuel light was on for about twenty miles before I stopped for gas.

Also, if one hasn't run their car this low (I don't usually get to), when the nav shows about thirty miles of range left, low fuel messages start popping up on the nav screen, with options to select "go to the nearest gas station".

I drove the car until the navi screen had three stars like this "***" for how much miles left.
