Proper Shifting Technique
I own a 07 G35 coupe with a manual transmission. What is the proper RPM range when shifting through each gear? This is for normal driving conditions and not racing and beating the crap out of a honda civic on a straight away.
1st gear to 2nd:
2nd gear to 3rd:
3rd gear to 4th:
4th gear to 5th:
5th gear to 6th:
1st gear to 2nd:
2nd gear to 3rd:
3rd gear to 4th:
4th gear to 5th:
5th gear to 6th:

There is not "proper" way to shift. Just if you dont feel like your beating it then your good. I personally shift at 3-4k and cruise on 2-2.5k but i just started driving 6mt a few months ago.
i try for under 2.5k rpm going through the gears. speedwise usually goes as following
1st - 2nd 10-15mph min 10mph
2nd - 3rd 15-20mph min 15mph
3rd - 4th 25-30mph min 25mph
4th to 5th 30-35 mph min 30mph
5th - 6th, 40+ i think the book says 38 but i dont go to 6th under 40mph
whatever is most convenient for you? because you'll be constantly shifting in city driving with stop signs and stop lights. sometimes i get lazy and rev higher on gear so i can skip a gear lol

Do you get low mpg? Just wondering if it makes a difference?

There really is no right or wrong shift points as long as you're not going too far to the extreme in either the low or high RPM spectrum(bogging/redline). It really depends on what your primary goals are with your car when driving it as to the best way to shift. If you want to accelerate quickly, have the exhaust sound cool, and don't mind a little additional wear on your tires and drivetrain..... hit the gas harder, and shift at a higher RPM.
If you want to conserve fuel, make your tires last longer, and reduce wear on your drivetrain, you can shift as low as you want as long as the motor isn't lugging when you put it into the next gear (usually that would be below 1600 RPM's to induce lugging on a flat road). Most drivers just sorta develop their own shifting tendencies as they get more familiar with driving manual transmissions and more familiar with their motor's power delivery RPM range.
Personally... i try to shift pretty low for the most part in all of my cars unless I'm accelerating hard or if I have my windows down and want to hear the exhaust reverberate off of the buildings around me.

I love listening to my exhaust thru the first four gears, I shift at 3K rpm enjoying the cool sound of my HKS/F.I./MAGNFLOW system. I don't care about mileage, if I did I be on my mountain bike....

I have never paid attention to mpg in any vehicle I have owned. I drive how I like and when it needs gas I put gas in it. If your worried about mpg you should have gotten a hybrid
Agreed my friend. I just traded my 09 mustang GT for an 05 G35 sedan 6MT. That was my way of saving gas. I get about 2 more mpg on the highway with the G and around 5-6 more in town. The only time I try to be easy on the throttle is for long trips. I've noticed that if I just cruise at 70-75 mph on long highway trips instead of passing everything with tires I can save a sh#t load of gas. Which means more gas to romp it through tunnels.

By the way, I know this probably isn't the best thread for this but this is my first post ever, yup I'm a newby. I've had my G for about three weeks now, love it, smoothest car I have ever owned. Do any of who have any suggestions about good threads for new Infinity owners? Also how many miles on average are you getting out of your clutches? I have 40,000 miles on my G and still feels new as any clutch I have had in any car. Thanks.

you'll love the car, what year is yours? but the car does has its share of problems, luck of the draw i guess. i have an 05 coupe and before the 06 seatbelt revision clip thing, its annoying as hell because the extender thing was attached to the frame and rattles every chance it gets if i dont have my seatbelt on. The seatbelt buckle was hanging between the seat and the door and it just rattled against the door. the REASON the seatbelt was annoying to put on was because the seatbelt receiver thing was attached to the floor and not the seat, so lower the seat down all the way and the seatbelt thing was sticking like 5 inches above the seat, putting the lap belt in an awkward position when i put it on. i know some people have replaced it with the passenger seatbelt receiver thing, but i havent gotten around to it yet.
alright onto the fun stuff. just a quick overview of some of the problems our cars have, like i said, luck of the draw, some people have these problems while some people never get em.
1. Oil consumption issue.
2. valve cover gasket faulty or something, resulting in oil in spark plug compartment.
3. early synchro wearing out in some transmission, my 6th is wearing out a bit so i have to shift easily into 6th or else gear grinds.
4. rear axle clicking thing, quick re grease and no more noise.
thats all i can think of off the top of my head lol. i believe there are TSBs out for #1,2,4
but i never regret getting the car, fun car to drive, killer exhaust note that makes everyone look, and hp to back that up for the most part lol. the horsepower war between car makers has made our cars a bit outdated compared to our newer counterparts, but thats what mods are for right?
