6MT OWNERS!!! Do you feel this?

Sup all...

I drive with my left hand on the wheel and right hand on the shift knob.
Always.

And so i feel the different vibrations and such in the engine at the knob.
But i'm wondering if this vibration is normal.

For instance, I'm accelerating through 4th gear at about 3500 RPM.
Then i let off the throttle to let the engine brake kick in and slow down. As the RPM comes down, there is a brief instance when my shifter vibrates harshly.

This being my first MT, i don't know if this is normal. But it has been with me since day one. Just wondering if it is indeed normal, or something i should have a tech look at.

So basically, while engine braking, shifter vibrates (noticably harsh) for a second or two. Like there's a sweet spot in the RPMs.

Anyone?

Are you a first time stick driver...hehe nah I'm just knockin ya....perfectly normal. What you are feeling when downshifting is the gear actually catch, so yes the stick will vibrate a bit harsher. After the harsh vibration it is then just normal engine vibrations causing your stick to shake.

YOu shouldn't drive with your hand resting on the shifter. You can accidentaly pop it out of gear.

yeah the vibrating gives you a little electric chair action...

ColdFusion 12-25-2004 02:16 AM

Its normal...at least in the g35 it is.

With "both" hands, 6MTs should measure pulse and heart rate too. Well, maybe the next release. :o

Having owned 3 manual cars before the G35, I was also surprised that the shifter
vibrated so much. I test drove the Mitsu Lancer EVO just before I purchased my
G and the shifter in the EVO was much smoother, with no vibrations.

But like everyone is saying, the vibrating shifter is normal on 350Z/G35. I've learned
to just take my hand off the shifter when I'm not shifting.

+1 I don't know if it's me, or if the tranny isn't quite broken in yet, but the 350z shifter seems to vibrate even more. I haven't even taken it passed 4.5k rpm yet.

Its a Nissan engine thing...

JohnnyCham 12-25-2004 05:42 PM

normal for RWD manual cars and trucks.

escobar929 12-25-2004 11:52 PM

i have an 02 altima 3.5se, and although is a different transmition i feel the same vibration, i would say 90% of manuals vibrate

Not only that, you'll wear your synchro's.

bunnone 12-26-2004 01:14 AM

As you described, the vibration is caused by an increase in back pressure on the engine / tranny / exhaust as you let off the accelerator. This is normal albeit more noticeable on the G / Z's. :)

Not only that, you'll wear your synchro's.
Will you really wear the synchro's???
