New Owner - Silver 07
New Owner - Silver 07 (Couple Questions)
Just picked up an '07 G35 coupe tonight. I've been perusing the forums for the last couple years to figure out exactly what I wanted - and I found it! I'll have some pictures whenever the rain quits and I can wash it again - the detail from the dealer didn't last an hour
She's got the two tone grey/black interior, 19" factory wheels, spoiler, sport suspension package, and premium package.
Being a used car and new to me - I've already found a couple odd things I need to figure out or get over. Maybe ya'll can give me some clues while I'm searching the forums.
* The car has a (factory looking) spoiler that has what looks to be red LEDs in the middle of it. I'm not sure if these operate at the same time as the 3rd brake light, but the 3rd brake light is working fine. What's odd is that with the car completely off, there's a faint glow from this spoiler light. I can't seem to figure out how to make it go away. I'm going to have my wife check to see if it lights up with the brakes fine tomorrow (don't think they'll drain the battery overnight...)
* I've heard an odd "clunk" noise from what seems to be the front passenger tire area a few times driving the car home. It seems to correspond to when I let off the brake. Brakes feel fine otherwise and it doesn't seem to be locking the wheel up that I know of... but maybe it's not the brake? Any ideas I can hunt down?
I'm hoping the forums can be of help here. Taking the new G to the shop first thing would put a downer on things
Thanks and glad to join the forums

Figured out the spoiler light... and that the car definitely doesn't have the premium package (as advertised), as I have no bluetooth radio. I'm going to need to find one of these used and get it installed ASAP.
So my first clue was that I had a 3rd brake light and a spoiler light - one had to be added as both didn't come stock. After tearing into the trunk this morning, I'll confirm that the spoiler was added. The area that curves around the edge of the trunk lid doesn't match up like a factory part should, but the real teller was the self tapping metal screws used to attach the spoiler

The light staying on - maybe some kind of capacitor holding charge for the LEDs? Not really sure - but the light was off this morning. What I did find was a hack job of installing the light bar that involved wire scraping all 4 wires, wrapping 2 of them with the copper wire from the light bar, and doing a very poor job with electrical tape that was probably shorting at some point. All of this inside the weatherproof connector between the trunklid and trunk. I went ahead and doctored this up, removing the light bar wiring and setting it aside for later reuse or trash.

Haven't looked any further into the clunk noise, but I'm hoping it was stuff in the glove box moving around. Any idea what this is?

Lastly - in the trunk under the panels it looks like I'm missing some pieces of tire-changing kit. Anybody know what should go here?

see?

from this pic

it looks like you're missing the tow hook, but I'm not sure. the picture is a bit small.
Welcome to the forums! Nice car you got there. As for the clunk noise, I have no idea. Possibly rocks? Hope you get it figured out. Any plans for your car in the future, though?

Nice!!!
And, I don't think you are missing anything in the trunk....mine also looks like it's missing something, but it's not. Think I saw an old post where somebody asked and there isn't anything that goes there.

Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the forum!
Nice job including photos with your questions. It's amazing how many times new members sign up and start asking questions that would be more clearly communicated if photos were included.

Congrats on your new ride! As far as the clunking noise in the front just to be on the safe side I would have your local shop do a front end inspection... Tie rods... Suspension joints... Brakes... Rotors and calipers... Also your front strut mounts. Just to make sure it all is tight. Better to spend a little money now than a lot later over something preventable.
Congratulations and Welcome to DRIVER!
Even though you may not want to it's a good idea to have your suspension checked out and the "Clunking" noise you're hearing. Not only for safety, but whatever it is may be causing your tires to wear prematurely. Do you have a qualified independent brake/alignment shop in your neighborhood that does quality work? That's where you need to take your G, not the stealership!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. For the time I had the G - I really enjoyed her.
Yeah - time. I woke up Friday morning, did the work I put pics of in the thread, and called my insurance to get her properly insured. They called me back and told me that the G had $28,000 in claims - 2 collision incidents. They also asked if it had a salvage title
The dealership and car fax only disclosed one incident, but not the extent or amount of the damage... well that one apparently was to the tune of $13,000. There was a prior incident in 2008 to the tune of $15,000
Needless to say, I called the dealership and asked what the deal was (Mossy Nissan in Houston, TX). The salesman kept repeating "That's impossible. That would never even make it onto our lot." This did not give me a good feeling about what was to come. I took the car by my insurance company so they could take pictures of it (a requirement of a car with this much prior damage...) and managed to snap this quick shot of one beautiful G I'd soon be missing.

Then took it to a local body shop in Conroe, TX. The body shop owner met me outside and took his body shop pen to the car, looking for all signs of damage. He didn't go so far as to take panels off, but did a very thorough inspection of the exterior (top) of the car. He found a good bit of questionable workmanship in the front right area of the car, which was the only area disclosed to me as being in an accident (the dealership mentioned a small fenderbender where the bumper was repaired... hah!) Some of this damage makes you wonder about what lies beneath the pretty paint.
Mismatched bolts, a couple knicks & a brand new headlight assembly that they elongated a hole in to make fit the other panels. Oh the mystery.

Mud flap/side moulding weirdness...

Spoiler was definitely added later...

He also found an area behind the passenger door that looks to have been a repaired dent with a good bit of bondo work. That and the whole right side of the car had been repainted, but just enough to cover the damage (lots of clear and no paint in some areas).
So - I took the car back to Mossy Nissan Friday afternoon expecting a fight. Somehow the sales manager just took my keys, said they wanted to make sure we were "happy and not thinking of anything else" and took the car back. Which was quite the relief. To be honest, I think I found the 1 in a 1000 car that previous owners passed off at auction as high quality and the dealership inspections missed. But I can't be sure of that, and now have even more disgust with buying a used car
And who knows if they'll do the right thing and sell it for scrap/cheap? It's still on their site for sale!
No more Gs in the area meet the high hopes I found in this one, but I'll keep looking. One of these days one is bound to show up that doesn't have $28,000 in prior damage
I had to choose a car nobody wants to sell
