Angry painting stalk 19" wheels and have a problem HELP

so i sprayed my wheels gloss black and they came out great butttt i have a problem
every thing i did i sanded them down and primed them and panted with can with gloss black several coats and a clear coat after the paint dried i waxed the wheels for a lil more protection and the next day went to have the wheels mounted well they were mounting the tires they damaged the paint on the edge of 2 of the wheels really bad so i wet sanded and cleaned with degreaser the damaged area and cleaned the rest of the wheel the best i could with degreaser to remove the wax (simple green) after that i taped the tires and re sprayed the wheels i dont think i got all the wax off because the pant is bubbling up in a few spots so how do i fix this problem

i was going have the tires pulled off and strip all the paint off and start from scratch but i was wondering if ther is an ezer way to do this ??????

I would leave the tires off and start over.

Whenever I paint wheels I just cover the tires and finish them with them on because I know the tire machine will ruin the finish of spray painted wheels.

When I got my wheels powder coated the guys at the tire shop were telling me their machine will scratch paitend wheels. I told them they were pc'd and no scratches or damage to the finish. I would do what songle6mt said and paint with the tires on.

NorcalG, this is a perfect example of why we don't recommend painting wheels. If you need to paint them don't dismount the tires cause they'll get damaged putting them back on... as your aware of now. Mask the wheel off that's got the bubbles and sand it down then wash with Dawn. Remask and paint again. When I've painted wheels in the past I wait until the temp is over 70 degrees and leave the wheels/rattle can in the sun prior to painting for the best results...G/L

yea like dismounting them, and sending them to a shop to get powder coated... or the 65.00 sears powder coat gun.

Just repaint with tires on. sand down around the damaged parts and tape off the tires and if you really want to be lazy, tape around the damage and re-spray just the damaged areas. I've done this a few times (curb rash and remounting of a tire)

Yeah, paint them with the tires already mounted...it's the only sure way you can protect the rim. Those tire shop guys aren't going to put alot of effort into protecting them. Use some soapy warm water with dish soap to clean them, wet sand them with a 6-800 grit, clean them again, use a deck of playing cars and slip each one between the tire and rim lip, overlapping them as you go....it creates the best masking of the tires I've come across thus far. And then if you want you can spray on some kind of adhesion promoter such as Bulldog. Should be good to go after that.

Many people learn sentence structure and spelling before attempting any kind of painting other than finger painting.

Nothing wrong with spray paint for temporary use. I did it, came out way better then my wheels looked before I sprayed them. Now, a couple months later, I'm buying some new rims. I agree, if it is more than a few months, you should definitely get them powder coated or it will look like poop lol.

Temporary use???

We got people Plasti-dipping everything on their car temporarily, now the new fad is temporary spray painting?

Save yourself the $12.99 you spent at AutoZone and time and effort and just save for wheels or do it right the 1st time.

Spray paint looks like "poop" no matter what. You mod your car like a hack, its going to look like a hackjob.

And seriously, who paints(well, half *** paints) and then gets tires mounted the next day???? A coat of wax isnt going to protect your spray paint from metal to metal contact of a wheel mounting machine.

Ive been painting for 15 years, its not something you just pick up overnight. Buy a book, talk to painters, have a professional do it.... all things that will help your wheels turn out better than they did.

Another thing... your paintjob is only as good as your prep job

Yes, temporary use. Is that a hard concept for you? I painted my wheels at the end of the summer and they came out great. They looked horrifying before I did it. Nothing wrong with doing it. Some people may take a long time to save up for powder coating or would just rather save up for something more worth it(like me). I spent $20 and drove for a few months and didn't feel embarrassed for driving a car with disgusting rims. I painted with my tires on though lol

I used gloss black rattle can paint on wheels I had on one of my cars many years ago. It actually held up very well for the year or two I had the car before I sold it, even during pressure washing them. And if it ever got messed up, it would be rather easy to touch up. Maybe I just got lucky. Granted, I live in FL where we don't deal with ice and snow with salt and sand on the roads...so I'm sure that played a major role in my success. Not that I would highly recommend doing it that way...but if you have a $hitty wheel to begin with, the only thing you're wasting is a few bucks and an hour or so of your time. Not everyone has $1500 for new wheels...or even $400 for professional powdercoating. To each his own.
