re-set ecu after break=in/mods & better performanc
I am re=phrasing my question, now that I am a littlle more familiar with this. My bud says the ecu is adaptive to your driving style and after mods,/break=in you should disconnect and then connect and drive like a maniac. He says you get performance improvement. He has Acura.
Should we do this?

you dont have to drive like a maniac
But its always good to disconnect the battery overnight (just incase) after break-in (incase you granny the car)
The ECU indeed is adaptive, i think you might notice a change in the accelerater since it is drive-by-wire throttle...
The ECU will adapt over time however if you decide not to unplug it. On our lexus it takes about 2-3 days of driving before it fully adjusts to my driving habbits (without disconnecting anything)
so in conclusion, disconnecting the battery overnight will help an automatic much more than the 6MT that you have (usually 15 minutes will do but overnight just incase)
Again, you dont need to drive like a maniac, because the ECU will just re-adjust itself once you stop driving like a maniac...which is another very good reason why alot of performance cars w/ autos have Manu-matics.

Rambo - I'm not saying you're wrong, but I was wondering why it matters if you unplug it for 2 seconds or overnight. Either way, you're cutting the electricity to the ECU, which should erase it's memory instantly, right? I've heard this about other cars, and was just wondering the reason for having to leave it unplugged overnight.

There might be some remote battery backup inside the ecu somewhere... for example if you look at a computer's motherboard, you'll see a small button-cell battery in there.....anyway...
What you need to unplug is just the Black battery terminal,
The battery is located in the far left corner of the engine compartment (passenger side) it is inside this plastic cover that you can remove.
Unplug it for 15 minutes and see if you notice any changes in shifting, if not, then you should probably unplug it overnight, then all memory will be reset for sure!

Re: re-set ecu after break=in/mods & better performanc
i'm going to unplug it when it gets warm, but quick question.....how hard is it to unplug? i've never undone a battery, is it as simple as lifting the negative (?black?) part up and that's it? then just slide it back on?

Re: re-set ecu after break=in/mods & better performanc
Sometimes there isn't a battery at all. It maybe that there is a bank of capacitors inside the ECU that retain charge for some amount of time before discharging. So if you disconnect the battery cable I believe you would need to leave an ample amount of time for this to occur. Just my thoughts, I'm gonna try it anyway even though I have a 6MT. Performance over programmed radio settings I always say.
