Wow thanks everyone for the great replies. I'm sorry for asking such a broad unfounded question but I did so in hopes that it would spawn the type of replies it has.

I'm 20 (almost 21) and I have a lot to learn about personal finances.

$1000 a month? perhaps if you had a DWI... What state are you in and what are you basing this on? Even at worst case scenario in NY, the assigned risk prices are not this high...

Yea what one person said about your only young once so buy the damn car! I second that b/c we all know we love the looks of the car and the way other people look at us in it. So being 18-25 with the car the people who are most impressed by cars are 15-20ish. So the older you get with the car the further these girls SHOULD be out of your range.

That's kinda why i ride streetbikes. I mean i love to ride and hit the twisties but it's nice to be different and of course get attention. But i guess for some of us it's nice not to need the material things, but with them it only gives you another lift over people!!!

One more reason to buy the car is cuz it's soooo hot. MY boy has the a 04.5 coupe and i take it from him every so often and i love it. When ever i feel like it i can buy it from him, b/c he doenst like to keep cars for long. But i just wonder if a $300 payment a month (thats with parents putting quite a few g's down) is best for me now, even though i could do it.

Finally go to the dealership and just go through and find out your monthly payment and call ins.

Buy the car and live in it. Who needs a home? Join a health club for the shower/locker facilities and you've got it made. Don't worry about things like saving for retirement or your kids' college education because we'll all be dead in 20 years anyway. I say go for it.

Just being sarcastic to make a point. The priorities of todays youth are so screwed up that everyone who gets their first job out of college these days feels the need to drive a luxury sports car (albeit an entry-level one). These individuals are even willing to live with their parents in order to own this car. They have no regard for their futures or their families welfare, only their own selfish needs.

I wouldn't say all of today's youths are like that. I'm fortunate with the job my wife and I have. We are 25 and saved all through college so we could have a house when we graduated. Built a house last year, got my G and she's happy with her new Grand Cherokee. I lived with my parents through college, drove crappy cars, and saved so I could enjoy myself when I escaped their grasp There are many younger G owners on the board who have worked hard for their G and gave up things to get it. I know what its like man. Bit my nails, dreamed, test drove, etc etc for almost a year before I could really afford one. Waiting for one sucks, but there are better, more equity building things to put your money into than a G.

of course, i do live in the midwest, where cost of living is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than either of the coasts. i have a spotless driving record and pay $210/mo car insurance (full coverage), plus $480/mo car payment, plus $400/mo rent, plus various expenses.

but of course i havent even begun to think about marriage, retirement, equity, investments, real estate, and the like. previous replies have stressed the importance of all of these, and dont count them out. retirement is always in the back of my mind, but frankly right now i just want to have a good time for a few years.

$400 rent! -I pay more for oil & electricity for my house.

It is all relative.

it's definitely all relative. cost of living is one of the main reasons why i'm living in omaha - which also lets me afford to drive a G. after all, where else can you rent a 2500 sq foot house with 2-car garage and jacuzzi for $1300/mo?

im just gettin ready to graduate in (june '05), and have a job in the field. i have been saving up, driving a crappy car ('96 civic hatch witha rusted hood and a black front bumper), and giving my parents a few bucks here and there. i feel as if though i have really busted my *** through college, and worked hard and deserve to drive the car i want. i have held myself back so many times from getting a car, in order ro make sure i get something i really want. to each his own.
