Hold a metal part on the car before you put your foot on the ground. Static is a bitch in the winter here.

My Honda Fit has cloth seats and I can feel the static build when I pivot on the seat to turn and get out. The shock is so bad, I can actually see the blue spark every time I touch the door to close it...SUCKS!

^^ That's enough to start a fire if you were at a gas station! Lucky for me I've never been shocked in my G, but I had a car a couple of years ago that would shock me once in a while.
If you didn't get shocked when you got in the car than you could be doing something while inside the car that is causing the static buildup. If you have any piece of metal in the car, you could touch that to eliminate the buildup, just an idea.
Carry around a paper clip wrapped on a rubber band and touch that before getting out and see what happens.

When I wear sneakers I sometimes get shocked, but it never happens with my work boots.

Yea on nice sunny days I don't get shocked. Hopefully when summer comes around it stops. Static electricity has made my driving experience with my G a little less fulfilling.

Yup, this happens to me too. That's why I always close the door by lightly pushing the windows. While it'll get my fingerprints on it I'd rather have that than get shocked haha.

When you open the door to get out of the car, place your left hand on the roof of your car, and keep it there as you step out. Keep in mind that you must first place your hand on top of your car before you set your foot outside and leave your hand there as you are stepping out. Now when you close your door you wont get shocked anymore. Works everytime
Or grab the lock pin in the door frame so you don't get fingerprints on the paint. Mine is black. Dust sticks to greasy fingerprints. Brown fingerprints on black paint looks stupid.

Seriously though. Turn from your seat, grab the pin, step out and separate from the car. No shock.

+1 I think shoes have a big part in this.

More than just shoes. Fabrics on the interior play a part as well. I seem to be shocked less often on leather. My wife's car is fabric but it's a certain type of nylon spun fabric. Hard to explain but it's nearly water resistant. So it builds little static as well. But my Saturn Ion did it to me ritually. So I learned to grab the door lock pin and hold on until I was standing up on my feet and then let go. Never got shocked again.

I'm not certain a ground strap hanging from the car is a good idea. If it was meant t help, they would be installed on all cars. I think it has a negative effect to the electronics onboard. I would advise against that. But a body to frame ground isn't bad at all. That's kinda what the grounding kits do is ground all the pieces together better than the factory did it.

Try turning off your auto headlights, preliminary results seem good but could be my mind
