Absolutely. The reasoning changes as the differential increases. So the balancing act between octane level vs. mileage savings is in constant flux. When your popping $80 every fill you start to panic a bit, and look for every possible way to whittle that number down, even by $5 or $10. I fill at least twice a week. That's 8 times a month. It's starting to hurt, with 2 cars and a truck (and a bike and a boat!).

I currently have a complimentry vehicle over weekend from the dealership and im pretty sure the previous user of the car pumped 89 octane or less because the car idled like crap and i only got about 200 miles on that tank of gas. 
The car only has 11,xxx miles on it.

dont use regular gas
If you use regular gas in you G, your power and mpg will take hit. when you also rev, you'll notice more of a rusty rev compared to the nice sexy rev we G owners love. God knows what else can go wrong over using the lower grade over long periods of time. stick to the premium.
Not sure how mid grade would perform, but it's better than regular.

You can use 87 or 89 in the car; the VTC will adjust for it. You'll lose power, and the car won't feel as responsive, though.
The reason that Nissan advises 91+ is because the VQ is a high compression motor, and is prone to pre-detonation with lesser octane fuels. But, Nissan also realized that there would still be people out there who would put lower-octane fuel in their car to "save" money. Hence utilizing the VTC technology, to retard ignition timing, to prevent pre-detonation and damage to the motor.
So yes, you CAN run off of 87 or 89. Would I advise it? Probably not. Will it hurt your car? There's no solid evidence either way that it will or won't. You're more likely to have issues with knock sensors going bad, and carbon build-up in the motor with repeated use of lower octane fuel.
If you drive like Ken Block, I'd suggest keeping 91 in the tank. If you just cruise around town, 89 is fine.

Like some have posted only 91 octane or better. For the people who question if they can put a lower grade octane in your vehicle, why? Sell the car!! If its too much to handle get a Honda or some other economical vehicle.
I have never complained or thought about putting anything less than 91 in my car. I know someone in which im sure we all do that complains about 87 prices LOL... So maybe you may need a bicycle??!!

I run whatever gas I want, just change the map of my Osiris and go. However, even on the low octane tune with regular gas the loss of power is noticeable so I've used that map very rarely.
