Radar detectors in banned states
Radar detectors in banned states
Anyone here have a stealth installation of a radar detector because they're illegal in your state?
I live in VA where they're illegal, but I'm still interested in having one installed as long as it's concealed from anyone looking inside the car, i.e. the police.
I'd like to get the Valentine1, but I understand that it has to have a view of the road in front and behind the car, so the mounting options are very limited. Maybe someone here has a creative stealth install for it?

Skillled person/installer could do it.
A place up here in Boston gave me the option of dissasembling my V1 and mounting one sensor in the hood and one in the headliner. The installe would have cost me twice the price of the V1 itself. So I just had them do the concealed display in my ashtray.
there are "concealed" or stealth kits, i dont know about V1 but escorts have one that is already "disassembled" it pieced up so u can mount the sensors inside front and rear bumpers and have the display somewhere in the car... they dont cost 2x but they cost a bit more, dont know how effective they are either
I have a stealth installation (Escort 8500) installed behind the tint strip - totally invisible from the outside. The only way for a cop can see it would be if he shoves his head through the window and looks up. I live in CT and detectors are legal here, but I figured I might as well hide it just in case I need to park in some shady areas or if I ever need to take a drive down to MD...

You don't have to spend $1,000 for a remote-install radar detector. For a while, I had a remote-install Whistler DE-3400 radar detector. It was like $170 for the radar detector and $170 for installation. One front-mounted sensor under the hood, that provided 360 degree protection, one laser detector (very small piece) suction-cupped behind the tint strip, in front of the rear-view mirror or something, and then the remote display was mounted right where the VDC and trunk release buttons are. It was a really great stealth setup for really cheap that offered really great performance. You can still purchase this radar detector online for around $160.
You can even purchase the 3450 model here for $200:

The picture only shows the remote display...there are still a few more pieces that come with it that complete the whole kit, and there is the optional speaker for voice prompts for like $50 or something.
