downshift, in case you have to quickly move somewhere, but you don't have to do it that way everytime.,..

I never downshifted, I always just dropped it in neutral and hit the brakes, don't know if that's proper, but never really made a difference in my opinion

I usually only downshift to 3rd and then hit the breaks, but I probably slap it in neutral more often. I drive differently on how the traffic is. Winnipeg drivers are terrible so I gotta avoid getting hit as much as possible.

My G is an auto but my MR2 is a manual that I just learned to drive a week ago. I find it easier to throw it into neutral and have already made that a habit. With more practice though, I want to start using the gears more just so I can better feel what gears I should use at what speeds.

the proper MODERN technique is to leave the car in gear (don't downshift) and thresh hold brake.. or let the abs do its job... clutches are more expensive than brakes AND brake systems are balance with a certain front to rear ratio... using the engine to additionally slow the car (by downshifting) greatly upsets the balance. Back in the day... brakes sucked so drivers also used down shifting. Modern brakes are awsum...

yea dont use your engine to slow down for daily driving, brakes are cheaper than drivetrain.

I usually hit neutral right after I start braking. As for downshifting, only do so to be in the right gear to accelerate out of a turn. IMHO, downshifting to engine brake is fine as long as you can and are doing it correctly and don't mess up as a proper downshift will not strain the motor or drivetrain. But anyone just throwing it into a lower gear and dropping the clutch should not be attempting it at all.

I agree with #ge35es...Don't downshift to slow down your car .....they didnt put nice brakes on a car for you not to use em...unless your driving on the freeway or you live in the mountain terrain where you need to leave it at a low gear to keep your brakes from burning out.

^OP I too have a IP with brembos....And I look at it like this... Its way cheaper to buy brakes then a clutch.

When I was 16 I took my driving test in a manual car. The tester told me that putting the car in neutral and coasting was wrong (but still passed the test). Some reasoning of needing to be in gear to avoid an accident, also that coasting in neutral you don't "technically" have full control of the vehicle (I'm sure that's debatable).

So I leave it in gear while stopping, then press the clutch when RPM get down near the bog point. Don't really downshift unless I know I'm not going to come to a complete stop. Engine braking is handy going down a mountain or to be the proper gear before a turn, but those are different topics than "stopping".

I always shift into neutral out of habit when I'm approaching a stop. It's not that hard to put it back into gear if you find you need to start moving again.
