G35 Reliability?

Just wondering..how well do G35 coupes hold up? I don't own one yet, currently working and saving up to get one.
I've been looking through these forums a lot and it seems like a lot of people have problems with their G35's? Idk is it just me? Seems like I'm seeing a lot of people having electrical problems on here and a bit of "odd problems" with their cars.

I only ask this because obviously I don't want to invest in a car that's going to eat a hole in my pockets for repairs.

If any G35 coupe owners can give me feedback on the car that would be great. I assume the motor is solid, being made by Nissan.

Do you have a particular year in mind? I have an 07 and have owned it since 09 and the only problem I have had is replacing the window motor, which was covered under my warranty.

Most likely 2003. Either an 03 G coupe or 350z. i'm leaning towards the G tho.

Nissan/infiniti produce reliable cars in general.. I owned a 1986 Nissan Laurel for 14 years and it was the most reliable car i ever owned.. And so, the same goes for the VQ engine which is found in both the Z or G.

It depends on you and how much you want it. Most used cars have common problems.. I knew about these problems before purchasing mine last year and i was fine with it. However, go for a 2005+ G though, which has an updated interior.. common electrical problems are door lock actuator and window motors.. i guess.

Perhaps get a newer car like an altima instead of a 10 year old car . If you need to save up for a 2003 and are concerned with cost to own maybe this isn't your type of car.

I would never use the word "invest" when discussing buying a car...though I suspect buying a 7 year old g35 is probably as good an "investment" as buying a brand new Kia, or Hyundai when depreciation is considered.

In four years, and 42,000 miles, my '04 coupe has required nothing more than a window motor and door lock actuator. It now has almost 70,000 miles on it, and I expect the next 40,000 miles to require a similar level of maintenance expense. I also think it pays to stay away from cars that have been significantly modified by their previous owners.

Buy a good one that has been well cared for, and maintain a modest maintenance fund ($1000-$2000 or so), and you'll likely do fine.

Our Infinities are like any other car, maintained to a high standard and they'll last a very long time. I put 125K miles on a '92 Nissan 300ZXTT when I sold it in '04, it's still on the street. Just doesn't look as good as it did when I sold it....

I have to say these cars are very reliable. As long as you take care of it, it will last as long as you take care of it

I wouldn't even take that into consideration. In my opinion the new Altima's (along with lots of other newer cars) are ugly and simply too expensive for me.

I don't necessarily NEED to save up, but I really don't want payments on a car, I rather just pay cash and own it. I'm already half way there, price-wise to a G35.

Plus I'm only 18. If you ask me an 03 g35 coupe for the price (12-13k) is the best bang for your buck for what you get out of it..

I have an 03 with 92k. So far so good. Only issues were wheels were too stock, car was too high, trunk had a bunch of left over spoiler that I had to remove. No issues (thank God), eyeballed the undercarriage and it's a beaut. I think I was really blessed to buy from car folks and, from what I can tell, they did no serious modifications. Anything they DID do was done professionally. I think your experience with this car will depend on whom you buy it from. Take your time in your search. I looked for about 1.5 years for mine. I settled on interior color but I got NAV, Brembos, and roof spoiler in return so I'm happy.

I'm sure it adds the same down force as your wind tunnel tested body kit.

You're mixing 2 different questions here...

1) How reliable are G35's?
2) Are G35's expensive to maintain/repair.

G35's are actually very reliable cars. The core of the car is built well and you're unlikely to have any problems that prevent the car from functioning as a means of transportation. However, there are a lot of little issues that plague the car and most G35 owners encounter at some point throughout the duration of their ownership experience. Here's where part 2 comes into play.... if things do break, they are very expensive to replace in comparison to a lot of other cars. Maintenance is also expensive for these cars as they eat through tires like Bill Clinton through White-House interns.

Here are some of the common problem areas on G35's:

1) Power Window Actuators/Motors, they often fail if you always use the Auto-Close feature
2) Bose 6-Disc In-Dash Head Unit, CD player portion stops producing sound from one side of the car
3) Plastic gears for the front power seats which move them forward and backward become stripped over time and need replacing @ $80 each
4) Rear Axle click problem (covered by a TSB on cars still under warranty)
5) Flickering trunk light due to wiring harness being too short and eventually fraying the wires
6) Excessive Oil Consumption on Rev-Up motor G35's ('05-'07 G35 6MT's)
7) Oil buildup in rear spark plug areas of the motor
8) Front tire feathering on inside edges due to aggressive factory camber
9) Problem with fuel filler hose neck which prevents car from being able to fill up all the way (covered by a TSB on cars still under warranty)
10) Outer clear shell of headlights get foggy over time
11) Reflective divider inside headlights that separates the built-in Fog Lights from the regular lights cracks in an S-shaped fashion
12) Body-Colored plastic trim strip beneath the doors of the coupes often cracks and hangs down towards the ground a bit (purely cosmetic)
13) Exterior paint is just generally soft and more prone to chips and cracks in vulnerable areas than most other vehicles (front bumper, hood, side-view mirrors, etc)
14) The side-view mirrors are easily broken off if someone leans on them or if you bump into something, due to the lack of a spring-loaded/flexible/retractable support mechanism built into the mirror
