Does anyone know how to take off the side mirror cover (painted part itself) ?
Hi everyone,
I am trying to do some DIY to my side mirror cover on both sides (painted part), but I do not want to remove the whole side mirror.
Does anyone know how to do it (without removing the whole mirror) or is it possible ?
Thank you!

You pretty much have to remove it because there is a wiring harness that goes through the black plastic base of the mirror, and in order to thread the wires out of that piece so that you can remove the painted shell, you have to individually remove the wires from the plug of the harness and back them out through the black plastic piece. In order to get at those wires and the harness, you're going to be opening up the door shell and removing all the same stuff that you'd do to take the mirror off all together, so there's no point at all in not removing the mirror. The mirror is only held on by a few screws... and removing it completely makes it 100% easier to feed the wires back in through the base when you go to reinstall it. It would be very difficult, to do most of this with the mirror still on the car.
I took my original painted shell from my old mirror and mounted it on a new black plastic mount piece at some point around 2007 or 2008 because someone maliciously broke mine off by pushing down on it while I was in a parking garage in Boston.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'd be more than happy to give you any guidance that you might need.
You can also do a search for posts by me with "mirror" in the title... I think I was pretty detailed when I did a DIY type post back in 2007 or 2008 on how to do this exact repair.
