Coolant leaking from reservoir?

Hey folks! Posting this for a friend who had the following experience:
As he was driving, he hit a bump, and shortly after heard a small knock, and immediately started losing coolant, and watched his temperature gauge rise. He parked the car, and called me over this morning to check it out. I filled it with water to get the leak to rear its ugly head, but no luck. However, when I removed the coolant reservoir, I noticed some coolant crust around the feeder line that goes from tank to radiator cap.

Is there supposed to be a hose clamp around that hose? If there was, that may explain the knocking sound he heard if the hose clamp busted. Is it possible at all for the car to overheat just because of a leak from the reservoir?

Can anyone offer some advice? I'm not very familiar with these cars, and would like some pointers in the right direction before I go ahead and diagnose things.

I had a similar thing happen to me I was driving and next thing I new my temperatures shot up and it wasn't good but it was that my water pump went out. And it didn't leak terribly fast as soon as I filled it up but by the time I got to the shop which was a 10 min drive it was almost out of coolant so it was bad hope you don't have that problem just going off experience
