Brake issue – this only happens 1st thing in the morning.

Description – this has only happened the first time I start and drive the car for the day. I get in the car and start it and begin to drive away. The first time I go to use the breaks the pedal is as hard as a rock. Doesn’t want to go down and breaking is almost nonexistent. If I push really hard (as if you were panicked – which I was) and it goes down and breaks engage. I may have unconsciously pumped when the pedal wouldn’t go down.

Breaks work flawlessly other than these 3 morning incidences. I had the pads and rotors checked back in June during regular maintenance and they were perfect.

For a while after the 2nd time, I’d start the car and pump the breaks/work the pedal before pulling out of the driveway. It didn’t happen for a couple weeks so I went back to the normal foot on break to start car then idle and drive away. Then it happened again today. I’ll have to go back to preflight (haha) procedure but ultimately need to get to the bottom of this.

Any thoughts?

PS – I did search but even with so many break threads I didn’t see anything like this.

Could it be the ABS-self-check? Does it happen when you're usually switching from 1st to 2nd? ie. at very slow speeds after the cars been parked a while.

I know some people have reported the brakes "shuddering" or stiffening up during this check. Lasts only about a second or two though.

I'd take your G to a brake/alignment shop, sounds like one of your calipers becomes frozen after it sits for a long period. Be sure to check your brake fluid level. Have you noticed any fluid on the inside of any of your wheels? That might pinpoint the troubled area....Gary

Weird, I would also check if the vacuum is leaking out of the booster after sitting too long. Try to just let the car sit for a while more on idle before touching the brake and see if its back to normal

Thanks all. Don't think it's ABS as there's no pulsing like I've felt in other cars with that problem. Frozen caliper is an option. Hadn't thought of vacume issue.

It's tough because the brakes are so good otherwise. Easy to look past it and idle for an extra few seconds like crazynuts suggests.

Probably need to take it to a brake specialist but considering I know a far bit about disks I hate to but it is a safety issue. Especially if i let wife or daughter drive it.

I said IF - haha
