6th gear grinding

Ive had my 2005 coupe for one year now and put 10k miles on it (60k total). In the last month I have experienced a very strange grinding noise that only happens if I come out of 2nd and into 6th. ( hard acceleration through first and second then shifting to 6th) this is the only instance I can get it to happen, clutch fully depressed, not short shifting.... what could cause this?

I too have this problem but only with 6th gear, sounds like a loud crunching/grinding kind of noise. It was like that since I bought the car (used 62k miles). Before buying the car I asked for it to be inspected but they claimed there was nothing wrong.

You're winding it out in second then droping it into sixth, the gears are spinning too fast to enter such a high gear. Why would you do that? I used to grind when pushing my Z going from 5th into 6th. Added RedLine synthetic gear oil and it didn't happen again, but you're just not using your MT correctly....Gary

^^^^ thats way to large of a jump between gears with them spinning that quickly. Gary is correct. Also you are most likely up for a gear oil change due to your miles.

Hmmmm.....how bout you ring out 1st gear all the way to 12k rpm and then dump it into 7th gear and see your reaction. While you are at it try the other way around like from 6th gear at 100mph and then dump it into 2nd and see how that works for you. Next time learn to skip gears and rev match. You do not go from one end of the gear on your tranny to the other end and expect it to be extremely smooth jumping 4 gears. I skip maximum 1 gear and get extremely smooth rev match shifts and no grinding here with DD and 97k miles on a cd009.

mine occurs just going 5th to 6th, not skipping gears...and its only 6th gear that had this issue.

I changed the gear oil the week I bought it... I used royal purple, i was told it is a quality product.

It is not something that I typically do... I obviously do not need to do any more though

Hmmmm.......ill get right on that... I may try to shift from 10th to reverse while im at it.... I know how to rev match. I obviously did not realize it was an issue. Now that you so tactfully responded, it is very obvious to me that I was screwing up by doing that. Thanks for your helpful input.

I love how marketing is so effective and just like we see it with Apple product line up. Royal purple claims racing oil so we use it on everything. I heard its pretty badd *** in the bedroom and adds like 12 whp in your *******. If you actually read and research you will see that ROYAL PURPLE IS GL5 which is horrible to use in the NISSAN transmission and the additives will cause the synchro to wear out quickly since we have soft brass metal. Switch back to NISSAN MTF and hopefully it will get better. Royal purple is only to be used in GL5 specification and that is fine for differential but your transmission specifically calls for NISSAN OEM GL4 FLUID. Royal purple is compatible for some GL4 transmission that do not have soft metals but i would stick to nissan fluid to save $$$$ in the long run. Enjoy those trashed out synchro and let the future buyer know what you did......

Stick with Amsoil GL4, REDLINE GL4 or OEM MTF.

Thanks for the links. Wish I had joined this forum and had that info when I bought the car and decided to change the gear oil. No need to come across like a jack*** though, you have made your point.
