What the hell is rear air diffuser?
#16
I agree...I'm not arguing nor am I trying to be an expert. I bought my car new in Dec of 2002 and knew I had the Aero package and checked my car to see what Infiniti might be calling Rear side underbody diffusers. There really isn't much to them. I also am much more familiar with the traditional types you posted.. My Mercedes E Coupe came with one and it is similar te the fourth picture in your examples. I guess the OP left the country.

Hey I am just curious with the 04 coupe packages. I think the aero package comes with a rear spoiler and something called a air diffuser? I attached a pic. Is it the parts I circled in the front and rear? If so how can it have the air diffuser if it has no spoiler? I also attached a pic of a G that does not have these parts. It seems rare to find a car without those parts at the lower of the vehicle. Does it mean this car just has aftermarket parts or something.
The "Aero Package" included the rear spoiler and "underbody diffusers". They cover parts of the rear suspension. Here is a post with decent pictures of the the diffusers and where they go under the car: https://g35driver.com/forums/5755271-post4.html
Infiniti claimed they (with the spoiler) add to the "zero lift" and reduced the drag coefficient of the car to .28.
These parts are different than an aftermarket "rear air diffuser" that attaches to the rear bumper. The aftermarket part on the bumper is what most people think of when you say rear diffuser, so it can lead to some confusion when asking about the factory option.

The parts you circled are just splash guards.

I guess technically this is ground effect and not really exactly the same as rear diffuser. but people have known that the underbody affects aerodynamics greatly since ages ago. It's just been easier recently with computer modeling. Nissan does pay attention to underbody maybe more than other companies, like the GT-R especially, but it's not that rare or special.

I'm referring to Brawn GP wins over Mercedes and Ferrari due to the rear diffuser they developed in F1 in 2008. Also the press it caused when FIA tried to sue and make the diffuser illegal since they were winning so much because of it.

After all that press from the F1 drama, you started to see more rear diffusers on cars like the e92 m3, c63 amg. Then a bunch of aftermarket manufacturers offering rear diffusers, obviously its more of looks, but more people knew about it and wanted it after the F1 drama on their cars.
Now other manufacturers are offering it as options or part of there sport packages.
I'm saying Nissan was kind of head of their time by offering it as options in 2003. Granted most of the german cars like BMW and Mercedes has most of the under body pieces on their cars stock.

the row in 2009 was due to people trying to get around diffuser restriction rules, not the existence of a diffuser, which has been around a loooong time. Here is what 20 min of googling finds, nowhere near comprehensive list.

I know, not anything near a production car. Having a hard time finding good shots of stock rears of amg, not sure what's stock and what's aftermarket.

I think It's more due to the improvement in computer modeling that we see more on production cars, but I don't know, I don't have a pulse on the market. Maybe you are right and most people didn't learn about rear diffusers till 2008, but it's been around for ages.

While reading this thread, I was thinking about the piece in between the mufflers.
