G35 Y Pipe issue

I have a 06 G35 Coupe 6mt with every option including RaS. I have been hearing a rattling noise for the last 2 weeks, in 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear, between 3000 & 4000 rpm. I have extended warranty up to 100K thru my Credit Union I only have 78k on my G, as I have a 2nd car. Took it in this morning to dealership, they said the noise is my Y pipe that is coming apart, the extended warranty excludes clutch & exhausts parts. They quoted me $675 for the replacement Y pipe plus labor. So I am looking at close to $1000. I might has well buy an aftermarket Y Pipe. How much is reasonable for a Y pipe replacement and the labor, and what are some decent Y pipes that maintains good deep tone.

Thanks

Really? $675?!?!? You can get a oem y-pipe on here for $50 give or take. Take it to an exhaust shop and they'll install it for $50-$100 depending on how firm you are on the price. Most shop sees you driving a Infiniti will will immediately jack up the price. Aftermarket y-pipe is also an option but if you're worried about sound go oem.

Maybe around $75 for a Y-pipe install. Buy your own Y-pipe, and pick it based on your needs. I would personally get a Motordyne Y-pipe with Resonator, as they are the best designed y-pipes for our cars. You'll pick up a couple hp/tq as well. They go for around $400. I would stay away from Stillen and ebay brand y-pipes as they're generally crap and can crack mid-pipes and cats.

If you just want to replace it with the stock Y-pipe, get one off of the forum marketplace. Z1motorsports may have one as well, or eBay. Should pay about $100 max. Our Y-pipes are designed like crap though as you can see in the pic below.

I have to make one correction, picked up my car and dealer corrected their price $675 installed. Still a lot of $ for a Y pipe, so I declined the the work. Since I am going to have to get it replaced. I am looking for good aftermarket that doesn't make the car sound like crap. Any suggestions, Darkstar recommended Motordyne, any others?

if you have a jack and a 14mm you can do this work yourself. look on craigslist for 350z or g35 exhaust and buy a Y pipe. this shouldn't cost you more than $50

It's not your Y-pipe. I guarantee you. I have the same rattling going on and it's still there after I installed my XYZ and have yet to find out where it's coming from.

It's either a worn gasket or the heat shield decaying on the cats. I had to chop the heat shield off of one of my cats.

Before you get crazy and start ordering y-pipes stop by a muffler shop and ask them where the noise you're hearing is coming from. Could be as easy as tac welding your converter cover....$10= I realize you still have a warranty but the stealership isn't the best place to get correct answers on some issues....like exhaust!

Great advise Gary. I may have solved the issue. So after being told my Y pipe was the cause of the noise. The next day my SES light came on (1st time ever car just hit 78k). I took it to autozone to get the code it came back P011 bank 1 Camshaft position sensor. I do not drive the car a lot as I have a Maxima so about 8k a year. My last oil change was about 8months ago. I took it in to the dealer to replace the Cam position sensor and do an oil change while I am there. They called me back and told me the reason the ses light came on was the engine was almost out of oil, and if the car very low on oil it will also throw that P011 code.
So after oil change ses light is gone and surprisingly that rattle I was hearing at around 3200 rpm while accelerating is gone.

Not sure why car would run out of oil, I checked my driveway and no leaks. And why would ses light come on instead of the low oil light.

Glad I didn't order a new Y pipe. Would have been a waste of $

Glad you figured out the noise, very sorry the noise was caused by you're running out of oil! Now you need to check your oil level frequently, consider yourself lucky you have warranty left....I see a new long block in your future.
