New Guy intro and maintenance Q...

Hey everybody...

Just thought I'd introduce myself before I asked a noob question. Maxx is the handle, but Eric is my name.

I just recently picked up an 05 A/T Sport package coupe to have as a DD, and my other car is a 94 Z32TT that I have been doing something to constantly since 2007.

These pics are right after I painted it last year.

Anyway, so far, Love the G. Im the second owner. The previous one was an early forties woman teacher, so the car has been babied. It needs shocks, and I replaced both front hub assemblies the day after I got it cause they were both howling, Otherwise, it is a really nice road car. Everything works, one little squeaky kinda rattle in the center top of the dash up close to the windshield when it's really cold out, but otherwise seems really tight.

I am really wondering at what interval the timing chain needs to be serviced if there is one, and what, exactly has to be done? Obviously the motors I been workin on for years have a belt, not a chain, so being my first go round with the VQ, I have no idea.

The motor seems perfectly quiet, I mean, hard to know it's running quiet compared to my cammed up VG. It hasn't used any oil that I can tell in the couple thousand miles since I got it (it's already been to Rochester new york and back to TN taking my kid back to school). So I don't think it needs a thing by the sound and appearance. Just wondering what I need to be planning for if anything.

Thanks guys, look forward to shootin the **it with you all.

Yeah...

it has gotten to the point anymore where if I gotta work on something I just pull the plenum. I can have it off in about 20 minutes with a second set of hands as many times as I have done it now. It sure is a lot of fun to drive though!

anyone know why the 300zx would have a timing belt and not a chain like most other nissans including the 240sx?

Cool...

thanks. I was assuming it is a hydraulic tensioner that runs off of oil pressure like in the ka24 my son's 240 had in it, but wasn't sure.

Probably the same reason your hands have to be less than 5 inches long if you want to work on one, just to be a PITA.

Very nice 300zx but as stated before bring the G pics. Should never need to mess with the timing chain.

Love the 300ZXTT! Drove my '92 for 125K miles, best handling car I ever drove with slight modifications. Yes, had the timing belt/tensioner replaced every 60K miles....good insurance. Did blow the radiator on the way to Vegas (Baker) that costing me close to $2K after towing.

You never did mention the mileage. The timing components don't last forever, if I was around 150K+ miles I would have a shop inspect everything for excessive wear.

Heres a pic i snapped of the g35 a few minutes ago. I parked on the hill in our drive to move my kid's car and thought the angle looked kinda cool. The wheels are off the z, threw them on because the ones that came on it are raw lipped, and we been havin salt on the road, dont want to mess them up. I know they need a little mor offset, but the allowed me to put a set of 285/35/19 on the back, and the 245/40s that were on the back of this car when i got it on the front.
