Has anyone found the trick to getting their exhaust tips chrome and not black? If they aren't clean, the rest of the car looks dirty the matter how much it shines. What do you guys use to clean out the inside of the exhaust tips? I am thinking a little muriatic acid on a damp sponge might be good for cleaning out the inside of the tips and getting all that black "soot" out...

 

I use Turtlewax chrome polish and rust remover

 

How old is your can?? That thing looks like an antique!!
This stuff does work well.

 

A little rubbing compound on a damp rag followed by a coat of wax works for me.

 

I wish compound was the answer.. this has years of carbon buildup in the pipe since I never really kept on top of it. Thanks for the tip on the turtle wax.. I do remember using that many, many years ago and have favorable memories of it.. I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. Thanks...

 

Actually I am going to pick up some 0000 steel wool to try with it... which I read is pretty good as well..

 

I use a cleaner for wheels, i think its some kind of acid for brake dust because it works great!! You will probably have to get it from a detail place and not over the counter..

 

The rim cleaner works well when it's not built up on it over the years.
Mine were in a pretty bad shape. I use steel wool/SOS pads to clean them however they did lose their chrome finish shine since the steel wool isn't so soft. I ended up using a polishing wheel on a power drill along with rouge Jewellery polish. Turned out amazing. Almost brand new. Good luck.

Not mine, I just robbed that off the net but I do remember those cans. If the tips are really nasty soak them with bug and tar remover and then hit them with the polish. This is my can of B&T remover

 

i spray some WD-40 into the inside of the tips then scrub them out with a dishwashing sponge (the slightly abrasive side, not the foam side). i finish up with soap/water or quick detailer.

Thanks for all of the tips... I am doing a lot of work to the car this weekend.. finishing the brakes, painting the calipers, doing all the filters including the cabin filter, plugs, coolant flush, oil, filter and so on and on... if I have time to get the exhaust done this weekend Ill do a before and after and let you know how some of these tips worked out.

 

Will these tricks work with the stock exhaust on an 03? I bought the car used but they seem like arent meant to be shiny??? A guy in my neighborhood always harasses me about them too...

 

yep, should work just fine
