I usually only use manual mode when I'm in stop and go traffic... I don't want to wear out the transmission by having it constantly have to change from first gear to second and back and forth. I just leave it in first and tap the gas and let the engine braking take care of things rather than give it gas, change to second, brake, and change back to first.

I also have no idea how to drive in full manual (never learned how to drive stick) so I almost never mess with it in normal driving conditions.

A lot of snooty MT drivers on here. Auto-stick is fun. As a Porsche owner who tracks his turbo on a regular basis, I enjoy driving my G35 AT in auto-stick mode, mostly downshifting as I decelerate into curves (and off ramps, on ramps, traffic circles when no other cars are around). (For the newbie: downshift on deceleration just as the tach comes down to 2000, engine will blip the throttle by itself, much fun!) Upshifting is not as much fun, trans does the same thing on it's own. But any experienced driver knows engine braking gives you greater control, on the track or in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

And a lot of overly defensive AT drivers here. Don't think anyone would argue against tip-tronic having its uses on the track, but the op made it sound like he wanted to use it for all his daily driving and was asking about normal upshifting, which seems kind of pointless.

Reason being there are a lot of 6mt drivers that I've seen talk down on the 5at.

Yeah using the tip tronic feature isn't very useful for daily driving.

Considering half of them are probably teenagers that think they drive a fast car to begin with, not worth taking seriously. Especially since there's only a few that actually track their cars.

since we are asking newb questions, is it okay to rev in park or neutral (or both?) if i want to hear my engine in a 5at? Or does that screw something up over time?

Until you get yourself on that list your just another teenager with a slow car.
I rarely go above 4krpm's, I don't own a "fast car" but if a guy wants a go at 1am with no traffic I won't say no idc if I win or lose. My point was I was surprised at their speed
