I turned, the rear wheel spun on leaves and then sputtered and died
Knock sensor issue would be detected by OBD II
Theres no way your engine is having pre detonation issues when starting up cold and idling.
Engine is in warm up mode so its burning richer and ignition is retarded.
Think you misunderstood the premise of my statement.
Your vehicle has rough idle which means its not burning fuel efficiently. When engine is not burning fuel correctly (IE Rich) it overloads the catalytic converters and may cause a sulfur smell. It may not necessarily have a fuel smell to it.
If catalytic converters are clogged it restricts exhaust gas flow, burnt fuel from combustion will back up into cylinders leading to fouled plugs and rough idle.
Mileage of vehicle, condition of converters is questionable.
O2 sensors may not accurately detect converter flow
Since you have no check engine light just trying to look at symptons that are not generally detected by OBD II engine management.

You called it I believe. I might knock on the cats and see if anything changes. It's just all funny that it happened as I turned. But stranger things have happened.
Another issue if catalytic converters are bad, they will break apart and internals collect in muffler, which also may need to be replaced.

I guess it could be so loaded up that it's bogging down so much and once it revs it blows out the extra fuel
My car by the way
Missed the part about smoothing out >4K RPM
Have you checked for vacuum leaks ?
If engine smooths out at higher RPM when accelerating usually means indication of a vacuum leak. The OBD II is very sensitve to unmetered air flow.
Very clean G for the amount of mileage.

As soon as I get my Knock Sensor in the mail I will clean my MAF and Throttle body while I install the Knock Sensor and HOPE that everything does better. After I cleared the codes it does seem to run a little better but that might be a off calibrated butt dyno giving me false results.
I just thought of something. I usually buy my gas from QT and Texeco. That tank came from a Racetrac and the car went through it REALLY fast. Instead of getting close to 375 per tank I got 325.....
I'm wondering if it was bad gas

I changed the Knock sensor and pig tail wiring harness yesterday.
I can feel a difference now. It is more responsive and it feels like it accelerates smoother, BUT the idle misses every once and a while and idles high, right around 1k rpm.
This morning I got a CEL , It's probably another Lean condition P0171

Reset the ECU, then monitor CAREFULLY for any issues such as unusual idle and/or unusual behavior at any point during acceleration.
If you're running that lean, and your original fix (knock sensor) doesn't completely solve the issue I would have someone look at it. The longer you let it go, the more likely you are to be damaging your internals.
The trick to these cars (any car, really) is to handle any issues before they become issues. You know your car and how it's supposed to feel - if something feels off have it checked out especially if you're still throwing lean codes. The ECU will only throw that code if there's still an issue. Worse, if you don't fix it, and you have another unrelated issue down the road it may be harder to tell since you never fixed the original issue.

Hate to say it man but it sounds like you still have an issue.

Ok Summery of issue: Car died on me the other day. Didn't know what it was cause the car had never given issue other than pinging for years now. I had already ordered a pig tail harness and a new knock sensor but didn't think it was related to the car cutting off.
So when I replaced the knock sensor and pig tail I got a lot of power back and it's Much quicker off the line but it was still idling funny and sometimes surging. I then bought some MAF cleaner and removed the MAF sensor. I found that the MAF sensor was DIRTY, real dirty. The heat elements were fury with dirt. I used the cleaner and a Q-tip and cleaned them. Since then the car idles excellent and pulls hard and run great. I think my mpg has risen back up as well.
Good ending
Thanks for the help guys
