Crap - Clear Coat Peeled - Hood Issue - How to remove Clear

So i finally got around today to wrapping my hood in vinyl like I had planned a while back. Issue is when I started off and repositioned the vinyl it took the clear right off the hood. Im thinking because the corners of the hood were damaged due to the bad hood mounts it simply lifted right off. Hood mounts were replaced but corners were knicked up from previous owner.

Now there is a 10" section on the corner with no clear. I cant wrap the hood because anytime i reposition the material it wont re-stick as the clear will lift.

So at this point my only option is strip the clear and wrap it. If i dont like the material Ill get it repainted/cleared.

Question is: Whats the easiest way to remove the rest of the clear so I can wrap the hood for the time being? Sanding? Chemicals? Thoughts?

Ive done a lot of wraps and never....ever had clear coat lift with the material before.

Looks like my only option is sanding it down. Ill get some 400+ grit pads for my DA later and go to town. Hopefully wrap it in the next day or two & when I get tired of the look ill most likely have the bodyshop respray the hood.

Lesson learned if your clear coat is damaged on a corner or has any imperfections don't add vinyl. My roof and trunk turned out perfect with no issues but the hood had some dmg on the corners from fender rub and it peeled it right off!

Do you know if your hood has been repainted? A poor aftermarket paint job might cause this

I dont think it has been, but its very possible. I bought the car 4 years ago w/34k miles on the clock. There were no accidents in the history report but that dosnt mean it wasnt. Nothing stood out on the car to indicate perhaps it had some repair work on it. I do know the corners of the hood had slight rubbing damage because the hood mounts were worn. I replaced the hood mounts & fixed that issue but the damage was clearly already done

When I was looking at g35's there were several I found that had clear coat/paint issues and were even newer than mine...05+...not sure if that's common with these car's but something I noticed when originally shopping for mine.

Anywho, just going to sand the entire hood down, wrap it, enjoy it and eventually when I remove the wrap ill end up getting it resprayed.

Cant be fixed. Your best bet is to sand it down to bare metal, then put a primer coat on to inhibit rust, then wrap it.

The cheapest way to fix it is to just buy a used hood. Many people buy CF and sell their OEM hoods for cheap.

Clear coats on all cars deteriorate because they're left out in the elements 24/7. Have your hood repainted, that way when you decide vinyl looks fugly you'll have a perfect hood to return to.

I wouldn't paint before as you'd unnecessarily risk damaging it again. Paint it after if that's what you want
