G35 5AT vs G35 6MT
Hey guys,
I have a 2005 G35 Coupe 5AT completely stock. I'm getting ready to buy a MD 5/16 Spacer and a Z Tube with K&N drop in.
I was hoping someone here can possibly let me know roughly what my 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are now (stock) and what they would be with the mods I'm getting.
I've only been able to find times of stock 2003 G35 manual (5.4 0-60 and 14.0 1/4 mile) and the 2005-07 G35 6MT (5.0 & 13.5). But nothing on the 5AT.
Basically I'm wondering if my 5AT with the mods I'm getting can keep up with a stock 6MT revup with a good driver.
Looking forward to hearings your responses.
Thanks.

A auto trans shift kit will cut that deficit maybe by half but it means losing some of the smoothness in daily shifts.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods
Not even close. I dynoed a 40 hp/tq gain only after plenum spacer, intake, ART pipes and a MD sedan VQ full exhaust with the XYZ pipe. Power is hard to come by with the DE motor unless you go some type of forced induction.

Bench drag racing is almost as bad as bench dyno testing. Expectations are usually higher than realistic.
I've seen plenty of guys think they can drive their car to 100% of the ability of their machine and fall short. I usually say the car is as fast as you can drive it.
I've spent plenty of time at drag strips watching Z06's and Cobras and Camaros run 15's because the driver simply cannot drive the car to it's limit.
So while on paper a car might be good for 12.xx seconds in the 1/4....doesn't mean you can drive it to that number every single time

I get the feeling that these threads are more about getting at the mean (average) "feel" of how fast a car is, compared to another. I mean, when I drove the 2003 Accord V6 6 Speed (can't believe how fast that car was...boring looking, but fast), I thought to myself, ok, that is how fast I need my next car to be, so, if the Accord takes 5.7-5.9 seconds to do 0-60mph, I need to find cars that have similar times to make sure I am not wasting my time looking at cars that won't suit my needs. In other words, although I could not care less how fast the car actually is, I want to make sure that the car "feels" about the same, as far as power delivery, compared to something I KNOW is quick enough for me.
I feel like that is the case with magazine times, it gives you a ballpark of where the cars, on average, are compared to everything else on the road. So while, I may never be able to pull off as quick of a time as a very experienced drag racer, at least I know that the "feel" of the car will be the same, as in, it will likely give me a similar "thrill", which is quite simply a factor of g-forces experienced when in gear. Now there are a lot of variables to consider, final drive ratios, how many forward gears, weight of the car, the power delivery curve, the area UNDER the curve, etc...BUT I think the OP may be thinking about, will my car be as quick as a 6MT with a few bolt-ons. Well, it's either that or it's just me projecting my ideas on to him
Interesting question, I think the manual will always "feel" faster, even with a worse 1/4 mile time, that is because the immediacy of the torque delivered to the wheels is just quicker...it will always be that way. That being said, the AT's have another 11ft-lbs. of torque, which is quite nice IMO, as torque is what gets you moving. If I wanted to make my AT perform like an MT, I would get a transgo kit, a 5/16" spacer and a drop in K/N filter, and call it a day. The bigger problem is the assumption that adding more power mods will "fill" the gap between the AT and MT, while this CAN happen, changing the shifting characteristics of trans is probably a better way to go to get the feel.
I had a hard time justifying an auto, but, I beat on manual transmission cars ALL the time, because they are so engaging. I wanted this to be a daily driver, that was also fun, so I went with the auto...I enjoy it for what it is and that's fine, but at times I still think about the manual every now and again.
