2003 Coupe (Rear End Drive Noise)
Hey guys,
This my first technical post on this Forum. I bought my 2003 G35 coupe about four month ago from the original owner (No Accidents), the car has a few issues that are no big deal for me being that I know how to turn a wrench. From what I have found while searching, some of the problems are very common. The issues are as follows, noise coming from the rear end, leaking valve covers, passenger window lowers when you open the door but does not go up when the door is closed. The car came with 20" rims which were showing scratches, corrosion and clear coat peeling. I picked up a nice set of original OEM rims with new tires for $300 could not pass them up and they kept my ride mobile while the 20's where getting refinished. I will install the refinished rims when I finish the rear end work.
I finally got to working on the rear end noise problem, considering that the car has 113K miles on it I decided to go ahead and start fresh with new (re-manufactured) half axle shafts and rear wheel bearings. I got everything I needed at RockAuto.com.
I started this project by draining and servicing the rear final drive gear box. I removed the left and right half shafts, and wheel bearings. I sent the hubs and new bearings to a local shop to have them replaced, unfortunately I do not own a press so I outsourced it. While waiting for the hubs, I decided to clean and paint the calipers. I have decided to go with black calipers. I will continue to post pictures as work progresses, bare with me while I figure out the picture posting process.

OK here are some pictures, I will be sure to post a lot of them as I make progress. I forgot to mention that during the troubleshooting process, I discovered that both wheel bearings appeared to be dry and felt rough when spun. I am convinced the noise I was hearing came from them, I will find out soon.

OK,
I replaced both left and right rear bearings, used the old hubs. Replaced both left and right axle C/V halves. Reworked rear disks and Installed new ceramic brake pads. Painted the disks and calipers black. Finally installed my refinished 20" rims. Now I am going to work on the front wheels. Here are pictures of the work so far. Test drove her and no more noises, she drives great.
