I believe the engine was to be the workhorse of the Nissan stable being available in almost all its offerings from the Murano to the Z to the G and M...With the highly ubiquitous and ever malleable engine, Nissan wanted to show how flexible and adaptive its engine technology can be.
The chassis was Nissan's new Front-Midship design which puts the engine block behind the front axle thus creating a better balance from front to rear. It is present in the Z which was the first application of the new platform and continues with the new M.

"It’s 11 consecutive years of Ward’s 10 Best Engines awards for Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and its 3.5L “VQ” DOHC V-6. No other engine has as many wins, and no other engine has won a 10 Best Engines award every year since the competition’s inception in 1995."

Yeah, the VQ30DE was first used in 4th generation Maximas in 1995. The first VQ35DE was introduced in the Pathfinder in 2001.. then in 2002 the Maxima, V6 Altima and I35 got it too.
Here's a good article on the FM platform..
