Manual Trans. - Rocking car back and forth on incline bad?

I was on a very shallow upward incline and I was sitting at a red light with heavy traffic and saw this black Civic SI revving his engine rocking his car back and forth (at one point almost hitting the driver behind him). From what I remember, this isn't good on the transmission right? I never really went out to get a definitive answer but I figure I throw this out to you guys. I think the kid was either bored or just showing off that he's driving stick, eh...whatever, I didn't really care...I was more curious about the transmission

^^^ what he said.

I just hold the brake pedal while I use the corner of my right foot to blip
the throttle (as a heel toe) and start off on an incline. rocking the car,
e-braking are what novice do.

Are you supposed to touch the clutch at all if you have your foot on the brake uphill and your car is out of gear?

And e-braking is actually harder, at least to me.. too much multitasking

No, if you're on a hill or at any stop for that matter, and you have the car out of gear, there is no need for the clutch to be pressed.

It's also recommended that you don't keep your foot on the clutch cause it
will wear out the throwout bearing.

so put it in N while you wait for the light.

yeah, there are soo many things to driving stick that can wear one thing out or the other. The conservationist will not ride the clutch, brake only using brakes (not downshifting), etc...

If none of this bothers you, save all the mechanisms in your car, but if you are more like me, I just drive for the fun of it. However, I dont rock, but I do downshift. Drive for the fun of it (if you can afford it)

Okay, it all makes sense now...I just wasn't sure if there was any purpose in rocking the car back and forth in gear on an incline. But hey, now I know thanks to you guys in this forum

By the way, everything you guys suggested is my existing habit with a MT
