redlined my g35 atm and now have problems

It is autotrajic. Relax it won't let the user have 100% control of the tranny like a manual would. Nissan engineered the autotrajic to not let you downshift and cause over-rev beyond redline. The TCU will shift the tranny down each gear once you have slowed down enough to safely get into the next gear. With manual you could have caused a lot of damage with autotrajic you are perfectly fine. Now your noise you are hearing could be something else like a chain guide or need to reshim your valvetrain. Aren't you glad you got an autotrajic so the computer does all your thinking and processing. You just sit back and slap your shifter up and down while the skyline does all the work.

I was getting on the interstate doing 80mph and 4th gear in bump shift mode.
My buddy hit the shifter and it switched to 3rd gear and red lined 4 times before I could switch back.
the engine oil level was perfect.....
I drove home and the engine was ticking.
its stayed ticking the same for 3 days then all of the sudden it got louder and lost power. I parked it immediately.
it retrospect I should have parked it immediately but it is what it is....
any idea what kind of damage I caused? just bent valves or damage to the pistons and cylinders also?
thoughts?

my gears maths may be terrible but 80mph in 4th is way beyond the revlimiter for 3rd by about a grand.

As for what it could be, well my guess is you blew the oil pump by over-reving it. the ticking is oil starved valves followed by them getting to hot as well as the rest of the block.
I'd get a new engine sourced, it will be cheaper to drop a long block back in over a weekend than a rebuild. you could go used but you never know what you are buying.

Your story isn't making sense... If you were doing 80mph the car shouldn't have even let you down shift to 3rd. I previously owned an '03 5AT coupe and it wouldn't let me down shift if the rpms were going to exceed 3500-4000 after down shifting. Also I accidentally red lined mine a few times shifting a tad bit too late; however, the automatics will auto shift for you even in manual mode if you red line for more than a second.

You can get to just over 100 MPH in 3rd gear in an auto-trans G35 Coupe without exceeding the stock 6600 RPM redline:

Your car probably already had an existing problem that maybe got made worse by revving it kinda high, but I don't think it exceeded redline based on the conditions you explained.

I have bumped the rev limiter in my car countless times, no problems. Now the rev limiter may not help you a bit in your case as all it does is cut fuel. You may have way over reved the motor by down shifting like that. It doesn't sound good.

As I said above, the RL won't help in a situation like that. It's like rolling down hill in gear, a RL would only cut gas and not slow the engine revs down. I have over revved cars in the past (6500RL and I did 9000 rpm!) and it broke a piston skirt. (but I did go 130+ in my 1965 MGB)

yea.. isn't the redline at like 6500 or something? i can't remember.. i dont redline it everyday.. maybe once every 3 months..
