I was getting on the interstate doing 80mph and 4th gear in bump shift mode.

My buddy hit the shifter and it switched to 3rd gear and red lined 4 times before I could switch back.

the engine oil level was perfect.....

I drove home and the engine was ticking.

its stayed ticking the same for 3 days then all of the sudden it got louder and lost power. I parked it immediately.

it retrospect I should have parked it immediately but it is what it is....

any idea what kind of damage I caused? just bent valves or damage to the pistons and cylinders also?

Yikes. I've mis-shifted before but luckily kicked the clutch before it hit past redline. I knew it was happening, but my body didn't react as quickly as my brain was thinking. Usually this happening once or so isn't going to do too much damage if you act quick, but it seems that your engine was sustaining quite a bit of stress for a relatively long period of time....

Before you tear the engine down, I'd go get a compression test. The most common damage from over-revving an engine are thrown rods and/or bent valves and a compression test will confirm that. It's impossible to know the full extent of the damage until you actually get in there, but the ticking and loss of power definitely indicates something is awry...

 

You can expect those type of responses, they have always been part of forums. Based on your explanation, I would anticipate the worst case scenario, an engine change or a rebuilt of your engine. So many things could have gotten damaged, I think I would start by doing a compression check first. This might isolate the problem to one bank of cylinders. I am sorry to tell you that this sounds like it will cost you some serious Benjamin's, even more if you are not able to do your own work..

redlining an engine shouldn't cause any of the issues you're talking about. engines are designed to sustain redline at least for a short period of time. the limiter is there to keep you from going over and doing damage as well. if something happened, it was probably something that was going to happen not to far in the future. a look over by a mechanic and compression test should tell you more.

"Bump shift mode"? So automatic u mean. The car is not supposed to allow you to downshift in high rpms

 

He has a 5AT and pushing 80 mph when his friend somehow pulled the shifter back putting it in 3rd gear and it redlined more than once. Lucky his "friend" didn't mess with it more putting him in 1st, they'd still be sweeping up pieces of engine and trans.
Having his engine looked at is a very good idea! Check our Marketplace for that Texas company that builds engines, you're going to need them...Gary

 

Drain motor oil into a clean pan and check for bearing material, also check oil filter.

Redlining your engine briefly should not have caused any damage.

After installing my Vortech SC and before Valve Body upgrade the engine hit redline to many times to count. Never had any engine damage from hitting rev limiter.

 

If he has an auto, he shouldn't be able to downshift into any gear that puts the car past redline. The tranny-nanny (ECU) prevents you from being able to do that by only letting you shift into gears that are within the cars operable limits based on your speed.

If your car is having problems after just that brief redline stint, it probably already had a looming issue that this situation helped to bring to the fore prematurely.

Did you check the oil level in the motor to make sure you're not down a bit on oil? How are the cars operating temperatures? Make sure there is no coolant in your oil or vice versa.

 

Exactly. The car won't let you shift down if it means exceeding redline.

 

Interesting. Any pre-existing problems? How long have you had the car? All maintenance been done "regularly"?
