Which gear do you use for fast passing?

I was wondering which gear do you all use if you want to pass another car on the freeway real quickly.Let's say you are driving at 65 mph on 6th gear and need to make a very fast maneuver and get up to 80 mph. I have always used the 5th gear but after owning the car for one year and getting used to its power,I feel 4th gear is better. Is it bad for the car to skip gears like that?
I am not redlining it. At times even 3rd can be the best while at 60 mph.
Curious to learn from you as I want to improve in driving the G.
Thank you.

Sorry if I am clogging space, but currently in my RSX S, I hit third quite a bit to pass. I am definite the G has more umph to it if I used third instead, but I just wouldnt drop the load on the transmission too hard too often to stay on the safe side.

Generally, the lowest gear you can be in without being past redline will offer the quickest acceleration. You get the highest torque multiplication there.

And as far as highest load, the trasmission sees the highest load for a given engine torque output in the higher gears. Higher gears put more resistance to the motor. which in turn puts the greates load on the clutch and gears.

at the speed limits I drive (45 to 60) I always use 3rd. My car hits 60 on 2nd so 3rd is the obvious answer.

Yea, 3rd gear is good for well past 60 mph.

"Drop a Gear & Disappear"

Rolling 5th gear at 65mph, depress clutch & change to 3rd, press accelerator to 4-5K rpms, drop clutch.

So you'd be cruising in 6th say at like 65mph and then press the clutch and shift to 3rd while hitting the gas to rev match and once at a higher rpm let the clutch out? Is this the right process? Because it seems that when downshifting to accelerate, the car jolts vigorously. Could this be from not rev matching it when the clutch is let out in the lower gear?

Thanks

DJM thats exactly the way you do it.

BTW at 65 go for third if max accel is what you are looking for. Third allows you to go up to 80MPH.

u have to let the clutch out smoothly and i think you might be releasing too low of an RPM... you have to BLIP the throttle around where u should be at around 3rd gear then release the clutch in a smooth fashion but fast enough so that the rpms won't drop again otherwise it will be using the synchros and will jolt a bit, it took me a while to get used to the G's clutch because when i first got her my 1-2 shift at 2.5k rpm when warming her up was a bit jolty but now its a piece of cake, also try it without VDC that helps a tad i suppose... practice makes perfect!
