How do paddle shifters work on v35?

Hey guys,

New member here. looking to buy a used coupe soon enough. In my area the auto g35s are the only ones that can be found under 15k. Manuals can be found for around 17k but just i just wanted to ask this question first. I have found some kits for paddle shifters on the 03-07 g35s. I was wondering how exactly they work. Are the steering wheels build with inputs for paddle shifters? If not, how do they work and how much would it cost to add these shifters? If possible i plan on doing any/all modding myself to cut costs.

Thanks for the help

If your going to get a Auto G35. I'd recommend getting a grounding kit and and trans go shift kit before doing the paddle shifter install. The g35 5AT is a well built trans, but it is kinda "slushy", and having paddle shifter with it would be delayed, and annoying. Now with a shift kit and a grounding kit, trans will shift like an beast with paddle shifters.

Check out this video with the shift kit.

Ya.... what he said. It sounds like you're setting yourself up for disappointment by purchasing a car that's an auto when you are already inquiring about manual shift mode options. Why not just pay the extra money for a 6MT? I'm pretty sure that all of the year cars that you are looking at included other upgrades as part of the 6MT package such as Brembo brakes (for 03/04 cars), the Rev-Up motor (for '05-'07 models), rim and suspension package upgrades as well. So you're paying that extra money for more than just the 6-speed transmission itself. It's worth it in my opinion.

I've driven quite a few G35's with the Auto tranny (Infiniti loaner cars and driving friend's G's). If you are already familiar with manual transmissions and know how to drive them, I guarantee you that you will be disappointed with the manual shift mode of the automatic.

Yea if possible i would go and get myself a manual. but they tend to be 4-5k more expensive than the manual ones. I still will keep it as an option but if i do end up getting an automatic, will i be able to put paddle shifters in? Ive seen the kits but am not sure how they work on first gens.

Yes the MT would be a top choice. But Dont let people talk you out of getting a auto. Sure the G is a blast to drive with a manual, but the auto is not that much slower and sometimes faster than the manual (depending on driver). I feel the Auto G coupe is more a Sport Luxury Grand Tourer and the 6MT is more a Luxury Sport Car.

I got a 5AT because i do alot of city commuting, and i have lower back and leg nerve pain. So me driving a stick daily would be hell after long driving, especially with the Gs heavy clutch.

Compared to my Acura TSX, the shift of the G are kinda sluggish, and 1-2nd slightly delays.

Put it this if you decide to get a 5AT G coupe, invest of the 600 of the 4-5k you save into a shift kit and grounding kit. Then you can use the rest for maintnance and mods.

Also another thing to note: A clutch could go out around 100k and could cost between 1500-2k to replace. Like i said 5r05ea Auto in our cars are pretty well built and reliable. if keep them maintained They can last to 200k and beyond.

But these are my 2 cents. Good luck with choice.

EDIT: Ohh as far as the paddle shifter go. Theres a youtube video of a guy that installed it in a 350z with 5at. I dont see how it wouldnt work with ours.

If you decide to go with an auto, skip the grounding kit and get the transgo upgrade. It makes a huge difference, and once you get used to the car, it'll be part of the reason why gear-bangers won't want to race you.

That being said, if you want a manual (why would anyone?), then just wait until you find a manual in your price range. Its a big purchase so you shouldn't go into it knowing you wanted something else.

Not that expensive to do a clutch on our cars. More like $600 to $900 parts and labor or like $250 to do it yourself.

As someone who has never driven a stick, got the 5-AT and played with the manual mode I couldn't agree more. I can only see myself using the manual mode to do mountain driving.
