350z or G35? (Please Help!)

Hello guys,

I've been looking around for quite awhile now and I can't choose between the Z or the G. I was hoping you guys could help me make my final decision.

Things to know:
-The 2 seats in the 350z do not bother me
-I like how the Z looks more "sportier"
-Price range is anything below or around 10k
-I'm 17 with no tickets or accidents
-Only want stick

I heard the G35 was a little bit cheaper when it comes to auto insurance because it has 4 seats rather than just 2. I also know that they are basically the same car with a different body. Just that the Z weighs a little less (which also doesn't bother me).

Thanks in advance!

Save your money and buy a Honda.
The cost of owning and maintaining are going to eat you alive.

Best Advice...

Any G or Z you buy the tires alone will cost you $800+ a set plus the maintenance and gas, add that to what you'll pay for insurance at 17 and you're better off looking for something more economical!

I think it's pretty much up to you on what you prefer. I think the G looks way better and still looks good to this day. Call around and get some quotes, think about total cost to own and make your choice.

Do not buy one of these cars so early. You will learn to appreciate them much more when you have a cheap car that you need to take care of for a few years. Earning the ride is way more satisfying.

Go with a G, but the guys are right, when your in college your car will stay practically stock bc mods for it arent cheap, if u do get a G put some rims on first, but think cheaper for sure, plus college kids will destroy your car with dents bc they have cheap ***** to so they WILL smack your car doors with there car doors!!

Get the Z. But not because of college or crap. You're on a G forum asking about which car to buy. How viable is college? Really? But, it sounds like you like the Z more. The G has more room and unless you're doing track work, you won't notice the extra heft. But, other than room, it's the same car. I've owned both a Z and a G. I like the G more because it's more practical. Also, the G is not expensive to maintain. The headlight bulbs cost a GRIP, but the maintenance is the same as the Z. And $800 for a set of tires sounds like someone is getting clubbed like a baby seal. But, whatevs. My vote is that you get the Z because you sound like you like the Z more. You're not going to save that much by getting the G...having had both..it's negligible.

Avg. price for a set of G tires for $800 is correct that's including installation. When Gary mentioned $800+ for a set, he was being generous. $800 will get you low quality tires. Super-flush (radiator flush) cost $210+ at the dealer. Compared to a Honda, G and Z maintenance is expensive. Hell, to replace the coolant overflow container cost $85+ just for the part, most Honda's go for less than $25. Wanna put a touchscreen headunit in your G, be prepared to drop $350+ for the double din kit, before you drop another $200-800 for your choice of head units. Don't even get me started on headlights and taillights. You have way more options with Honda's and the maintenance is significantly cheaper.

Yup. That's what kids don't think of when they buy these. Just cuz you can afford to buy the car doesn't mean you can afford to drive it.

How much stuff are you guys "fixing" on your cars? I've done some headlight stuff and that's about it. I gotta do an 02 sensor, but I just grabbed one off a 350Z and when the snow clears, Ima pop it in while I'm upgrading my diff and going to poly bushings. Probably gonna do some exhaust stuff too, but what's breaking? I'm on my 5th year now with this car. Nothing broke on my Z while I owned it.

I mean, we can't compare it to a Honda. They make fwd economical cars. Our cars are neither. An S2K is the closest they get so I don't understand why we keep making that comparison.

Also, I 100% guarantee I buy more tires than you guys (cuz...I drive with a bunch of camber and I drift), but what tires are you buying that are more than 200bux a tire, and how long are they lasting? I'm legitimately curious because that seems high for 18 and 19 inch wheels.

My rear tires last a little over a year (10k-15k miles). I buy Khumo Ectsa LE Sport XL tires...they run about $170 per tire x 4 w/tax came up to $705, just for the tires. Installation was about $40. So it cost me about $750 total (they also had to adjust my camber/alignment $150). And these are low end tires. I bought them because of decent rating and cheep price compared to the others that will easily push you into $1000+ territory.

I haven't had any serious issues with my G. We're just letting him know if money is an issue, he might want to consider a different car for college. Crack a rim, window won't roll up, wanna upgrade sound system, want 06-07 headlights or taillights, tire replacements, forced induction, oem parts, and any unforeseen maintenance is gonna cost a lot more than a Honda Civic, accord, prelude, possibly S2000, which will still be a nice looking cars for college.
